Muang Khua
Muang Khua is a dusty little town in northern Laos.  It's pretty, set along the river and snuggled in a valley, but it doesn't offer much.  It's literally just a transportation hub for river traffic.  People come and spend a night on their way either north or south, before loading back into a boat and heading on.  Since transportation in Laos is so slow and unreliable, I imagine there are several of these little towns scattered throughout the country.  Small local community, handful of guesthouses and restaurants, and not much else.

I met an Australian girl who was living in Muang Khua for two months, doing research for her thesis.  She's majoring in agricultural economies (I didn't ask for the name of her specific degree, but that's the gist of it), and Laos is a prime example of such.  So here she is, busy and stimulated with her work, and lonely and miserable as can be with the cold showers and constant travel to/from neighboring villages and complete lack of anyone to have a conversation with.  Poor girl.  But she was really great, I enjoyed talking with her.  It's always so interesting, the people you meet.
