The Leisure Class Loves Osaka
October 6, 2009
Pops had taken to calling me "The Leisure Class" this summer, being unemployed and loafing at home. My daily routine consisted of eating, sleeping, reading, snacking, lazing, contemplating working out, my sister making fun of me as I laid on the carpet "pretending to work out," eating, researching for my trip, floating in the pool, loafing on the couch, and eating some more. Also, the cat and I tried to see who could sleep more. (He had me beat by FAR.) Not a bad life.
And I must report, this Leisure Class is loving Osaka. Big bustling city with lots of noise and neon lights and very little to see in the "tourist" department. I'm staying in Namba, the "hip" and social part of the city known for its nightlife and shopping. Which means my day consisted of sleeping in, poking around on the internet this morning, strolling around the shopping avenues and vast stretches of pedestrian street malls (covered and therefore perfect for a drizzly day like today), and back to the guesthouse in the afternoon to unwind from all the strenuous leisure time.
Dare I forget eating! Had a scrumptious lunch in one of the myriad restaurants along Shinsaibashi-suji (the pedestrian street mall). Had a heaping bowl of rice and seaweed covered with giant fried sea scallops, udon soup with green onions and fresh seaweed, and pickled cabbage. Washed it all down with superb chilled tea. SO good. Sooooo good. My Leisure Class tummy is happy indeed.
Plan to stroll around in a bit around dusk to capture the area as night falls and the gazillion lights make everything brilliant and cheery and fun. Couldn't be happier with my downtime in Osaka.
