Berlin and Germany from several vantage points

Brandenburger Tor at Pariserplatz

I had much planned for the day so, no dawdling around. The day started out a bit miserable, weather wise. It was overcast, chilly, and spitting the slightest bit of rain. I headed for the Uhlandstrasse Station of the U-bahn. Today, I got my connections right and made it to Brandenburger Tor in decent time. I was worried about being rained out!

When I exited the U-bahn in front of the Brandenberger Tor I was very surprised, the clouds were dissipating and blue was visible between the clouds. I positioned myself and took some good shots but, as always, people generally have no consideration for anyone when taking pictures.

The German flag flies in front of the Reichstag dome
I really try to be observant of my surroundings because it bugs me. They had made great progress as when I was here last there was much construction. There is minimal and looks to be done, soon. People started to annoy me, so I decided to come back after going to the Reichstag for a visit. It is another thing that was not achieved last time. I always tell myself that I can’t do everything. You are constantly making choices. But, I am an over achiever. I want to do and see it all. Hence, 53 countries and I am still going strong. But, enough about that, on with the story.

I walked through the Gate. It always gives me tingles, and walked through the park to get to the Reichstag. I was considered ‘bombastic” and was hated when first completed. It was badly damaged in the World War II and only the shell remains of the original building.

Berlinerdom's damage post war
Inside was thoroughly rebuilt but in a modern style. To top it off, a dome was added of glass. This glass would be stacked and the dome would appear beveled. It’s a sight to behold. I’ve never seen anything like it, melding the old with the new. It’s a masterpiece or art. As I approach the front steps, I see that there is a line. It is a very long line. The info people told me that right now it would be 1 hour 15 minute wait. I decided to come back, working on the other places on my list for today.

With the sun coming out, I decided to return to the Berlinerdom to get my 360 degree views of Berlin captured.

Berlinerdom and the Lustgarten
I had run out of battery, yesterday, much to my dismay. The day was shaping up to be a mostly sunny one, at least for now. As I passed the two museums on my list for the day, I checked their closing times. I had read that on Thursday, they close later. While taking in the wonderful walking path in the center of Unter den Linden, I checked and one was open until 22:00 and the other 18:00. So, I determine the new order for maximum efficiency, religion, history, government, art, and then local culture.

I cross the Lustgarden to get to the Berlinerdom and notice the fountain is not only pumping water straight up into the air but, is also misting it a bit, as well. This is making little rainbows so I try to capture one in a photo….

Cross on the Berlinerdom
.success!

I bought my ticket and went in and straight up the stairs. I wanted to make sure that I got my pics before the clouds returned, if they did. Along the stairway is a chronicle with pics of the Dom post war and during its reconstruction. I took many of the shots as they tell a history that would be hard to describe. I climbed the 266 stairs, again. It’s good for me. I haven’t been to the gym since before Fryslan, not good. I reach the top and for my hard work, the view is spectacular. Maybe the view is even better since the sun is not causing me limitations on one of the sides like it would have, yesterday. So, maybe this was meant to be. I will think of it that way. I take my time with the wide angle lens and get all of my 360 degree shots. The wide panoramas of Berlin are amazing.

Distant views of Medieval Church in Central Berlin
I then, removed the wide angle for close up shots of the church and distant shots just not possible where the buildings are located. It was a great opportunity. During this process, I noticed an obviously medieval tower that I hadn’t seen before, how nice. On my way down, I took some other detail shots in the lower stairwell. There is a magnificent baroque archway detail…..fantastic!

I continued my descent into the crypt. It’s a very large crypt with many, many coffins from almost 500 years of rulers. The styles and detailing are dramatically different. There were even some baroque detailed coffins. This is something that I have never seen. If you haven’t either, look at the pics…..wow! Some of the oldest were very simple and barely even any detailing. Some had not detailing, just a wooden box.

Baroque coffin in crypt of Berlinerdom
Those did have beveled sides but, still plain by the other’s standards. There were some special crypts that had areas of their own, such as Kurfurst Friedrich Wilhelm and Sophie Charlotte. There was even this one coffin that seemed to have a simple coffin surrounded by an extravagant façade. I could tell this because the façade is falling apart and revealing the simple coffin inside. Enough of the creepy stuff, I stopped in their shop and bought my monument for the collection and a beautiful card with the Dom done in a way that showcases the church as historic and old and of Berlin as new. I may have to frame it.

Up and out of the basement, the sun is still out…yes! Next on the list was The Deutches Historiche Museum, again, for a pictorial overview for Rob, my father, and everyone considering a visit.

The Last Judgement - detail
It’s a must in Berlin. I went on and on about it yesterday. What I will add to that as I took many pictures not contained in their companion book, that I bought, is that because of the effect that Germany had in the twentieth century, The portion from 1914 to present can take you a whole day……seriously a whole day. Yesterday, I focused on early Germanic tribes and the Middle Ages, a favorite time period of mine. I browsed heavily the 18th and 19th centuries, but then had little if no time for the 20th, so I had to rush through it. Today I spent more time in the 18th and 19th centuries and even with the hours I spent today, Germany’s effect on everyone’s lives in the twentieth century deserves much more time to absorb what is here. This is the place for World War I and II buffs but, be warned, there are documents and propaganda posters and pictures, and diagrams, and models that will make you sick to your stomach or cause you to shed tears.
Close up of Christ Crucified
I did both. If you have a heart, it’s hard not to. I took many, many, pictures of what moved me most. This is only a tiny fraction of what is here. My apologies, if some of the material causes someone pain. I was shocked to be seeing things that I saw. I think everyone should see these this exhibit so we don’t forget. All of those who died deserve that.

After all of that emotion being drained from me, I felt like I needed some comfort. I went back to the Starbuck on the square at the Brandenburger Tor for a piece of carrot cake. It was as good as yesterday. I lingered and looked on at the gate and what I had just taken in. I felt worn out.

Up and out, the clouds returning, I walked back to the Reichstag.

Napoleon's had from the Battle of Waterloo - France (1815)
There was still a line but, we were down to a 40 minute line. I decided to wait. I really wanted to see this great contrast of styles. The 40 minutes turned into almost 1 hour 15 minutes. AAARRGGHH! We all had to go through a security checkpoint like at the airport and then wait for an attendant and elevator. It wasn’t long and we were lifted onto the viewing level and in another line. This line was for the audio tour. I forgot to tell you that this was all free. I moved into the dome and the tower of mirrors is intended to focus light into the lower assembly area, reducing the lighting needs for the room. Also their angle can be manipulated to what will produce the greatest amount of light. The tower is a work of art and engineering as well. There is a ramp that has a gentle slope taking you around the dome and tower of mirrors while showing you a great view of Berlin. At the top, it is open to let our stale air and has a drainage system to take care of rain water.
Left arm - close up
I walked around the lower viewing deck which gives you a unique perspective of the Brandenburg Gate. I left the Reighstag and headed back to the Gate. I stopped and took a picture of the line in the road that shows where the wall stood and the gate in the background. History, again…..wow! I had to walk through the gate one last time, for this trip. It make me think and that’s a good thing.

My next stop was the Guggenheim " Berlin. I love art and have visited the Guggenheim in New York. I enjoyed it and wanted to see what they were showcasing in Berlin. The listed artists being showcased are not all being showcased, at this time. The signage out front and the pamphlets are deceptive.

Mirror tower of Reichstag tower
The artists that I desired to see where not apart of the current exhibition. I’m an artsy guy but, I don’t understand 40 pictures of study of the square, in different color combinations being considered art??? It’s just not my thing. It could have been a fantastic experience if the promoted artists had works shown in the exhibition.

So, it’s getting dark, now and I know what ever I do now has to be the last thing for the evening as I have to pack, write today’s blog, get my info for the Palace I plan to visit, and check email.

I decide on Octoberfest! I walk to Alexandarplatz where the tent is set up with the beer garden is set up outside and a red and festive looking façade built with drunk bears and women with their breasts hanging out by the doors.

Octoberfest in highgear in Berlin. What a party!
As I walk up, I can hear the festive music and drunken men yelling to the songs. I walked up and was asked how many for a table. I said that I was just wanting to see the celebration. The tent was decorated with red, green, and gold fabric draped on the ceiling, things hanging from the ceiling, and a band in the corner belting out the Bavarian tunes. Many people were showing up in Bavarian style clothing to show pride in their heritage. It was a great thing to see and experience. I didn’t stay long as it really isn’t something for a person alone. It Rob had been available then we would have partied Octoberfest style.

The U-bahn for Alexandarplatz was a short walk from Octoberfest and tonight, I was able to navigate much easier. I guess that it just takes getting used to. I am starting to figure it out….so it’s time to go.

At the Hollywood Hotel, I get pre-packed and my other evening necessities, write my blog, and book a rental car for Italy.

Poster regarding the Marshall Plan, Potsdam (1950) The participation of the three western zones in the Marshall Plan also meant the inclusion of West Germany in the TransAtlantic community of states.
Wow, that’s next Saturday! Off to bed! I has been another great day. I’ve seen so much today. I’m happy that things worked out the way that they did.
