No trip to Vienna in the summer months should be without a trip to the famous Prater Carnival Grounds.
The Prater is a giant Festival/Carnival that runs all year round and is home to the famous Riesenrad (ferris wheel) from which you get a great view of the city...
There are plenty of cheesy carnival rides such as haunted houses, rollercoasters, bumper cars, shooting galleries etc etc.
The Prater is actually a very large garden/forest area which was originally the hunting grounds of the royalty.
But what really distinguishes the Prater is the magnificent Schweizerhaus Restaurant.
The name implies it is a Swiss restaurant but it is perhaps a little misleading. The restaurant has been around since 1766 when the Prater was still just a hunting ground.
It is now a Gigantic Beer garden type restaurant which serves a very famous and delicious dish called a Stelzer. (translates literally to Stilts)
This is basically the leg of a pig that is baked so that all the crackle is still on it. It's a fantastically unhealthy meal but gives you the genuine Fred Flinstone experience of eating. You order in 100's of grams depending on how hungry you are...
There are plenty of other items on the menu and the beer is very very good here.
The place is huge and usually has around 1000 people or more sitting around.
It's always a good evening!
For those wanting a healthy meal... you can always ask for water..
Guten apetit!
Opening hours
Daily open from 11:00 am till 23:00 pm. Season from 15th of march till 31st of october.
