The capital we never wanted to see, but ended up in anyway..

San Josè ! Of the 30 different capitals I`ve been to in 4 different continents, this is undoubtedly the ugliest one! Probaqbly also the dirtiest, and most polluted air(on level with Damascus and Kairo). Also probably one of the smallest, with exeption to Torshavn on Faraoe island which is the smallest capital in the world.
We entered the Coca Cola bus terminal in the most shady part of the city, and took the first taxi to the San Carlos terminal where our bus left just as we came there. So we took a new taxi to get to a hostel which was among the first ones listed in Lonely Planet - Costa Rica Backpackers. When we got in the taxi Torunn noticed that someone had actually tried to steal from her backpack, as the side pockets were opened. And the same thing on my backpack…fortunately we only keep like dirty underwear in these pockets so nothing was taken.
We checked into the hostel, and went out to see the city in the few hours left until dark. On the way we saw the worst architecture I have ever seen. Our hostel was right next to the ugliest building in the world , it was totally amazing. Just like the true beauty of a sunset cannot be captured by a camera , the true ugliness of this building is something that you just have to experience, so if ugly buildings is your thing - go to San Josè !
We kept walking for the center and found our selves in the middle of a candy festival with a big concert. Then we followed the central avenue through the whole center of the city. The people and the streets were very dirty and shabby. The main street of San jos``e was crowded with street sellers with pirated CDs and DVDs.
And I have never seen a city with more fast food places then this one (though I haven’t been to the US yet…). I just can`t eat at places like that unless I am utterly desperate. We ended up sitting down at the one and only proper resturant we found in the central avenue, which was connected to a nice hotel. That was a good deal as the food was really tasty.
Tne we walked back to the hostel, no more San Josè….we`ve seen it all in a 2,5 hour walk.
The hostel had great ameneties with a nice pool and garden with a bar. Even a resturant with projector cinema, and Wi-Fi internet. With that said the room was horribly bad for the price of 28$ we had a 5 sqm room in the basement without ventilation, or windows, and without bathroom. And the bed was bad, and we could`nt sleep as there was partying going on….I`ll make a review !
