We decided to Stay in Casco Viejo , the old city of Panama, even though Lonely planet said it might be a bit shady....a few years ago the hotels here rented out rooms by the hour.....
When we came with our taxi from Tocumen airport (was 30$) it was about 23:00 in the wvening, and he drove us into this area of the docks where dark figures were roaming about doing who-knows-what.......
Then he kept on in further and further in the deserted, lonely streets of Casco Viejo...I was starting to think it was the wrong place to stay, but quickly realised after only a day in the city , that this as actually the best place to stay!
Casco 'Viejo is a much more Scenic and interesting place to be then in the "new" town.
Also the panamanian beer is great ! which means that we are sure to stop at every waterhole we pass to get a nice cooling "Panama" or "Balboa".
The tip of the penisula at Casco Viejo offers some hefty views of the center of Panama city, and also there`s loads of these amazing birds, mostly gigantic pelicans chasing after fish. .
After lunch we followed the Calles central to a big shopping street with loads of shops selling clothes for 1$ for each garment...pretty crazy, but the panamanians seem to love it ! We even did a bit of shopping here, but tried to focus on quality and brands more then getting the one dollar pants.
Then we kept going for the center of the city , as I wanted to see the skyscrapers up close....and this was nicely done from the promenade. Seems like Panama is`nt suffering too much of the economic crisis as half the skyscapers in the city are in the process of beeing made !
