I was in a difficult position now. The charity project did`nt work out, found out that this clinic was only open at times when there was these American vets coming to help, and otherwise closed. So it was closed. Then I had to make a very tough decision , where to go now !?
I wanted originally to go up to Honduras, and to Roatan to spend the rest of my time diving, and enjoying, but then I read that the UK embassy is advicing agains all sorts of travel to Honduras, and that there is a near civil war going on there with lots of killings. OK , so I wouldn’t be going there.
Then second alternative was going through El Salvador to Guatemala, and spend the rest of the time there. In the end I did`nt want that either. The more I read about El Salvador, the more discouraged I was….
So in the end I had to retreat back the same way I came….back all the way to Panama again..
I met 2 funny German guys on the hostel that I would travel with to San Juan Del Sur on the pacific coast of Nicaragua, my newfound destination of fun !
We got on the chicken bus, as so many times before , and set off for new adventures.
So there I was again in the middle of nothingness trying to figure out a way back to Granada, even having left my German travbuddies !
I got back to my book after Hitchin and bussin` a lot.
Without this book I am simply put totally lost. With its guidance I always know where to go, and what’s worth seeing, and how to see it. I know where and when buses go, and where the decent accommodation is.. So Leave no book behind ! Even though I lost several hours of valuable sunlight by going back for it!( sun sets at 5.
I finally got to San Juan Del Sur and checked in to one of the million hotels here. This place is basically just a city made up from numerous hotels, internet shops, and surf shops.
I found a nice little hotel where I got a decent room with bathroom for 8 $ (although he started on 80$ …but that might have been his poor English)
I met the German guys again at night, and we agreed to go surfing the next day.
We hired surf boards and car at the most popular hostel in town ; Casa Oro. Both me and the other german were amateur surfers. I`ve only had one lesson ,and that was 2 weeks ago in Costa Rica. But the instructor did tell me that I was born for surfin` (or something in those lines..hehe).
We drove in a super cramped 4x4 to a beach called Maderas, where the waves where just insanely big, and there was rocks on both sides of the beach!
I was getting cold feet ! These 10 other guys where all like pro surfers ,with these super small boards, like 1/3 the length of my board which was like 10 feet.
Me and my amateur friend got in the water, and it was fun fun fun ! I have a new favourite sport I think, after diving.
We spent 3-4 hours playing in the waves, until my stomach was burning*( even though I was wearing rash guard this time! Had a horrible burn the first time I surfed)
My amazingly pretty sunglasses where forever lost in the waves when I forgot to take them of - rest in peace…
Then we ended a great day with some beer in the sun…nice….
The good book states that Nicaragua is the safest place in South America, but I hardly think so. There were lots of tourists that have had problems in the last days with criminals. Even at this beach a local smiling guy with backpack came to check in to a dorm at the beach hostel. All the stray dogs ran towards him when he came, barking and gnarling like crazy! Then he checked in at the hotel, and stole everything of value from the dorm and put it in his backpack.
And several tourists here and Granada have had some bad experiences. The scam that is going on now, is that tourists go to a bustop and there a cute girl starts talking to them. She is really nice, and really tries to help ! Then she explains that this is the wrong bustop ! But she can share a cab to go to the right place. So then they get into the cab, then afterwards like 3-4 men comes into the cab, and then they drive of with the tourists , effectively kidnapping them for 2-3 hours in the car. One girl told us that her and her boyfriend had been beaten for an hour, then they stole their valuables. Then they wanted the VISA pin codes, so they gave them the wrong ones. When they found out they beat them another half an hour, and they stabbed the guy in his hand with their knives.
