So the time was come to leave our beloved Panama to check out Costa Rica ! It took a bit of effort as there was hardly any direct routes to our destination….we had to take 4 different busses, one taxi and one boat ride to reach our first destination which was Bahia Drake on the Osa Peninsula. This was the route - Boquete-David-the border-Paso Canoas- Neily- Palmar Nord- Sierte- Bahia Drake ,we even had to spend the night in Palmar as we`d missed some busses on the trip due to time-confusion ( C.R is one hour behind Panama).
.The next morning we were in Sierte, and were surprised to find that there was loads of tourists sitting in a really touristy resturant by the harbour.
First the trip took us through a cool river surrounded by mangroves , the perfect croc-territory !
On the spot where the river was meeting the ocean the waves were incredibly large and scary. Today was a day with loads of waves…Our captain was driving onto 4-5 meter tall waves and the boat was literally flying into the air and landing in the valley between 2 of these waves. All the girls were screaming constantly (fun screams though, not the fearing for their life kind ,although it would have been suitable). I even found my self screaming when we were flying(also a fun scream) due to the adrenaline kick it gave !
After 40 minutes of jumping on gigantic waves I came to understand that this wasn`t for our amusement , the captain was seriously struggling to get past these breaks.
When we were finally out on the ocean we saw some great big humpback whales and their calf surfacing with their big back fins ! That was pretty cool to see , as these are a rare kind of whale. Then we arrived at this amazing island in the beautiful pacific ocean to do some snorkelling. All the other people were wearing life jackets while snorkelling….but I couldn`t do that as it would take away the whole point for me. It was like 15 meters deep here, and all the fish were swimming around the corals on the bottom.. I was swimming all the way down to them to meet them fish-to-face , seeing them on the surface isn’t even remotely the same thing, and besides I won`t have a burned back afterwards !
The fish here was just amazing ,like I have`nt seen in any of the other tropical oceans I`ve dived….
(but obviously I was reeeeally hoping one of the many types of dolphin would show up and give me a nudge….and on the other side hoping that one of the local sharks would`nt show up)
Then we were on the island for about an hour having lunch on a beach with loads of other tourists. The waves were enormous, and crashing down on the beach so that the boats were having serious problems getting back to the beach to pick up all the people. When they finally managed to get in to the beach it was pretty danger zone as the boats were almost capping over in the waves.
We managed to get on the boat eventually and were ready for the relaxing boat trip to Bahia Drake….
It was dark before we got to the Bahia bay, so we took the first hotel on the beach, which was great !
Ranchu Hotel gave us a nice cabin with aircondition, refrigerator and great hot showers for 40$ ,so we were pretty happy…
