a miniature tongkonan on the main crossroad in Rantepao
Rantepao is the largest town and commercial center of Tana Toraja, the perfect hub for exploring the nice countryside around,a far better option than the provincial capital Makale. As the area was opened for tourism in the 1970s,the town offers plenty of accomodations and restaurants. There are also plenty of shops selling locals products like sugar,tobacco,vegetables,fish...,a supermarket (I have discovered in it oil packed in plastic bags! and  a new one is under construction. but I didn't see a bookshop:in fact you can't find a book even in English! in Tana Taraja (I saw a book about the Wallace line, another on fish....),probably because there are few tourists.
I saw the local people buying water to a water supplier using drawn water from the polluted river that is filtered with American engines but don't drink this water because it remains dirty!

tongkonan, traditional Toraja house in Ke'ke Kesu'
Located 4 km south east from Rantepao and lying in the middle of rice fields and water-buffalo pasture,Ke'te Kesu' is a well preserved traditional Toraja village with 6 well-maintened tongkonan(traditional house), 12 rice barns,a ceremony ground with 20 menhirs and several artisans producing wood and bamboo carvings.Nobody seems to live here now and, if there is a tongkonan open to  the visit, you have nothing to see except wood carvings and one former hearth with  cigarette butts!
Heading the trail  behind the village to a cliff, you'll see several graves of chiefs and noble people in particular a cemented one which contains the bodies of the former chief and of his 3 brothers.

Around 100 buffaloes were slaughtered for his funerals!Further we saw workshops and unfortunately  several diseased cacao trees:most of the cacao trees there like in many other places are in bad shape.
On the cliff face there are old hanging graves with rotting coffins suspended on wooden beams and other coffins, piles of bones and skulls along the path.Heading up ,there are also grave caves one full of tau tau is closed by a gate. Here can be seen the tau tau of a granny wearing earrings and a purple dress.Another cave,to help the deceased to feel fine, contains some of his belongings:a ventilator,an annuary...
