on the way to Rurukan, the Agrotourism village:a cows-drawn cart

We did an interesting day tour with the cautious driver of Highland resort in the Minahasa land located around Manado in the northern tip of Sulawesi.

First just after our breakfast,as digestive,we visited the classic and surprising TOMOHON MARKET(see next entry).

Then JAPANESE CAVES(see review below) and heading on a winding and narrow road,we met a cows-drawn cart before  reaching RURUKAN ,a village located upon the hills, also known as the Agrotourism village because of the clusters of plantation areas.

Turning left,we reached on the top of a hill an area called Temboan which is an amazing viewpoint with spectacular vistas on Tondano lake,Molucca sea, volcano and countless terraced vegetable gardens.

Following the narrow road through coffee stands and vegetable plantations,we arrived at the administrative center of the Minahasa region, the TONDANO town surrounded by the largest ricefields of north Sulawesi.  TONDANO LAKE is stretching out in a large volcanic caldera around 650 m above sea level. This lake,14 km long and around 6 km large( the largest in north Sulawesi) surrounded by mountains supplies fresh water, irrigation, electricity(it is the only hydro-electric source of the region), aquaculture and tourism thanks to a cool, refreshing climate.

fish farm on Tondano lake, more than 50 enterprises raise in nets fish like tilapia or carp
We had there a lunch on a "floating restaurant" close to a fish farm(we didn't try the local tiny fish called Nike). There are around more than 50 farms raising carp and tilapia in nets.

We only had a glance in the pottery village of PULUTAN to the new district pottery center launched last June by the Canadian Ambassador:its shop sells a lot of souvenirs and average dust traps!

On the road we saw a couple of rat hunters, one with a gun.A good rat costs about one euro like a bat in Tomohon market .

And in the villages and towns, near every 100 meters,we have seen a CHURCH.In north Sulawesi is the most important christian community of all Indonesia with more than 95% of christians, but local believes are still alive in particular rituals to the ancestor's spirits.

We visited then an interesting volcanic area with small sulphur lakes before reaching, near Lahendong village, the LINOW LAKE,a sulphur lake that changes colors depending on the weather with bubbling mud holes on its banks.

Our guide and Danielle wondering about the large house in Woloan, famous center of knock-down wooden traditional Minahasan houses
One can see in this area lots of small and large birds. We had there a coffee in one of the 2 lovely coffee shops before heading to the village of WOLOAN,famous in all Indonesia and now abroad:it is a center of making traditional Minahasan houses with buyers from Bali,Jakarta,Japan,Usa and even France:last year a French did a business in the area of Marseille. These prefab houses are built with 3 types of wood(frangipani, ironwood and nanthu wood). It takes only 2 months to 8 carpenters to complete a house of app.115sq.m usually without kitchen and bathroom(usually built separatly from the house there),but people can order a knock-down traditional house to their own specifications. These houses are also earthquake resistant and very cheap in comparison with western prices.

Finally we reached Tomohon and visited the Gardenia(see review below) with its amazing gardens, booked our dinner before coming back to Highland resort
