Less known legends of Venice´s sights
“Nothing is simpler than to lose oneself in Venice and nothing is more fun than to be in this labirinth without a Minotaur, as a Theseus without an Ariadne's thread.".
On your Venice trip you will discover that Venice itself is the main attraction.
1. The venetians were well known for their love of beautiful women and their love affairs were frequevent and legendary. Many of these love affairs started in the caffes of the Piazza San Marco, so in 1767 the government prohibited women from frequenting caffes. Now Piazza San Marco is considered the city´s main symbol and is one of the most beautiful squares in the world.
2. The Torre dell´Orologio (Clock Tower) on St. Mark´s Square is of huge importance, both practical, historical and symbolic in the story of Venice. The clock is an extraordinarily elaborate timepiece that shows the hours in Roman numerals, the phases of the moon and the Zodiac. It was constructed by the Rainieri brothers and the legends says that later the two creators were blinded by the Senate in order to keep them from repeating such a wonder elsewhere. In the past the clock gave indications to sailors about the tides and which months are more favorable for sailing.
3. The Prison Palace was famous for being difficult to escape. However, someone did manage to demonstrate the contrary and this one was Casanova, romantic hero and one of the most legendary venetian seducers. He was placed in prison by the state investigators because of his lascivious and anti-religious habits and escaped one year later!! Casanova reached Paris where he lived for 20 years before he was pardoned and allowed to return to his beloved Venice.
