DAY 16- Hopfgarten to Munich

Munich Travel Blog › entry 23 of 36 › view all entries

My European vacation had been in the works for a while, I just didn’t know that I would do it through Contiki tours. Originally, I was just going to grab my backpack, buy a Eurorail pass and set out on my own. But, with limited time, I decided doing a tour would allow me to see as much as possible in my timeframe, therefore, I chose a 23 day European Vista tour, through Contiki. It turned out to be a fantastic decision!

DAY 16- Hopfgarten to Munich

Marienplatz

We left Hopfgarten after a great breakfast. It was definitely one of my favourite stops on the tour. We made our first stop of the day at 9:00 at the Swarovski Crystal Worlds (just outside Innsbruck) it was definitely one of the weirdest museums I’ve ever been to! We also got to shop in the store. The jewellery was lovely, and I did buy myself a couple presents. We got back on the bus and headed for Munich, Germany. Before we got there, though, we stopped at Dachau Concentration Camp. It was an amazingly emotional experience- I can’t even find the right words to describe it. We pulled into Germany and got a short tour of the area in and around Marienplatz. We had some free time, so Kerrianne and I did some shopping. Then we went back to Marienplatz to see the Glockenspiel hit 5:00 and do it’s little show.

Marienplatz
It wasn’t all that great, but what we did get to see, which was even better than the glockenspiel show, was a protest of a large group of people standing up for the rights of a country I’ve never even heard of! Marienplatz became packed with protesters and police, and of course all of us looky loos! When done, we checked into our Munich hotel (Park Inn Munich East), and had enough time to change before going to a Bavarian beer hall, Hofbrauhaus, for dinner. I sat with Jess, Celia, Kerrianne, Ryann, and Kim, and a married couple from Israel, and an old, drunk, German man who had been there for hours already, ad who taught us German beer drinking songs. It was fantastic! And, the beer was amazing, too! The steins were huge! After our beer and dinner, and couple shots, we were put in cabs and sent to a club, Rafael, in the Kultfabrik district.
Marienplatz
I don’t remember a lot of this, as many of us didn’t, as there was a lot of beer consumption, and the last shot I did (which I’m sure was rocket fuel!) at the beer hall put me over the edge. I do know that upon entering the club, we were given a bottle of Vodka and four Red Bulls to share between four of us. After finishing the drinks, the dancing started. We danced all night, up until the point where I lost EVERYBODY from my tour. Considering how much I’d had to drink, this isn’t hard to believe. So, I got in a cab and went back to the hotel. Even though I had a card to get in, I got locked out (it turns out I was a the wrong door. All I had to do was walk about 20 steps to my right in order to get into the building) After about 15 minutes standing in the rain and trying to get in, I finally realized where the right door was and got to my hotel room. I went to sleep right away. It was a great day!

Hofbrauhaus
Hofbrauhaus is everything you’d imagine a Bavarian beer hall to be, complete with servers in Lederhosen, wooden tables with benches, Oompah band playing music, beer served in 1 litre glass steins, and big pretzels to soak up all that beer with. Add on top of that German drinking songs and salutations, and you get one of Munich’s top tourist attractions, the world’s most famous beer hall, and one enjoyable night. Established in 1589 as the Royal Brewery of the Kingdom of Bavaria, Hofbrauhaus has a long history, complete with being the site of some of Hitler’s meetings. Some of the long, wooden tables in the hall have been there for over 100 years, there are beer lockers for the regulars who want to keep their steins in a safe place, and there are as many locals as there are tourists (according to the regular visitor I sat with). The food and the beer was good, but the atmosphere was what made it so memorable.

Rafael
Found in the Kultfabrik section (which claims to be the largest party zone in Europe) of Munich, this was our second stop of the night, and it was CRAZY. Upon paying our 5 Euro admission fee, we were given a ticket for a bottle of Vodka and four Red Bulls, which we collected at the bar and shared between four of us. When we got into the club, there didn’t seem to be many people, but not five minutes later, the place was PACKED! Hardly any room to move at all, let alone dance. We managed to find the room, though. We spent most of the night there, but before I knew it, the 40 other people I was with seemed to disappear. Granted, I had met a guy, but to just go and disappear doesn’t make sense. Turns out they had gone next door, but with so many people, it is not hard to lose the people you’ve come with. That said, we did have a great time dancing all night.
Park Inn Munich East
If you’re looking for a hotel that makes it easy to get around the city, this is it, as it’s right on a train line. However, that also means it makes for a noisy night. That’s the only complaint with this hotel, as it is a clean and efficient hotel that offers a good breakfast. The staff was friendly, and quick to answer questions or help in any way. The rooms are average in size, and are clean. It was the first hotel room we got that had an iron and ironing board, so we were very excited about that.
