us at the base of sólheimajökull glacier!

after having some breathtaking view of eyjafjallajökull glacier and the volcano itself - with tons of waterfalls flowing down at its foot, we drove past it to a much bigger glacier - mýrdalsjökull! as we were awed by eyjafjallajökull - our tongues were hanging at the sight of mýrdalsjökull! such a big pack of ice plopped into mountains and valleys! we cheered and gasped inside the ass killa (landrover defender) at the sight of sólheimajökull glacier sticking out from the base of mýrdalsjökull! its really like in the pictures weve seen!

there was a sign on the ring road n1 to sólheimajökull, we followed it and left the concrete road and in a matter of few minutes - we were bumping up and down, drove and crossed muddy holes and paths, water and mud splashed into our 4x4 - maike was doing such a TREMENDOUS job in off-road driving! (our driver big matt from yesterday switched with maike today) as if maike was driving us into the moon! it took us aout 20 minutes to drive and cross a spectacular off-road filled with magnificent views ahead - rainbows! so many rainbows ive seen in one place - plus valleys and raging rivers - oh my god! what more could i/we ask for in this adventure - AND WERE JUST ONLY ON OUR SECOND DAY OF ROADTRIPING! at the back - erik, lieke, janja, wilmke, me and mike (who traded places with amber) cheered loudly as maike finally delivered us into the parking lot of the glacier UNSCATHED.

sólheimajökull glacier! up close and personal!
i looked at the little shit lada and it made it's way safely followed by the bandit (land cruiser) a few minutes later!

at the parking lot and looking at the skies above, it was cloudy and it began to rain, wasnt really an ideal weather for a glacier hike, some of us, including me changed to waterproof jackets, we arrived at 10:45 am - 15 minutes late for our 10:30 am scheduled hike, but as we arrived no one from the tour company was waiting for us, so we thought that probably they were also as late as us!

we milled over the area of the parking lot, taking pictures - not only of sólheimajökull glacier itself, but also of the moonlike landscape - it's just beautiful! barren waste of land with green patches of grass in the mountains that surrounded the glacier - plus rainbows! you can just see rainbows everywhere! i had to joke to big matt to hurry at the end of the rainbow to find his pot of gold hahahaahahaha.

rainbow! mark, janja, rj and dave who looked like a grasshopper in his outfit hahahaha

waiting until 11 am for the otur company to arrive - we were getting impatient - other tour companines arrived with SUCH HUGE CARS that they looked like boats making our landrover defender a baby in comparison! there were people already orientated about hiking the glacier and were given gears as they started - maike started calling the glacier company but they were unreachable and sometimes we lose signal in the area.

more and more other people who booked the tour through other companies came - we thought they were ours :D hahahah maike came up to them and asked while busy - most of us were fooling around and unbelievably erik just plucked me out from the ground and carried me and spinned me around and threathened to dump me into the mud! arrrghhhh other people from other group tours looked at us in amazement and i saw david b.

jeff at the parking lot with sólheimajökull glacier in the background!
looking in disbelief. hahahahahah hahahah it was fun! glad erik didnt dumped me into the mud - otherwise i will send him straight back to the netherlands! lol hahahahaha

waiting till 11:30 it was no use, the glacier company would not turn up. so we decided - WE GO TO THE GLACIER ITSELF! hahahahahaha - raining and wet, it was a bit of yucky thing to step on mud - but good ting ive got an ankle high mountain boots - so walking around wasnt uncomfortable - the grip on my boots was really good! i had to stay quite a bit on the back again as i took pics while the guys hurried themselves to get up the glacier! i was surprised at harri that he has only trainers on and was one of the ones who's leading us all! hahahahahahaha.

i was really surprised that when i look - left, right, up or down - david b.

david b. - high enough to see the valley below sólheimajökull glacier!
is there! hahaha i kinda warmed up to him, eventhough he doenst talk a lot - i understand him. i kept taking series pics of him. wihch apparently i dont know if he likes or not lol, but he seems to be enjoying his time! he's game for such a climb withouth proper gears - he went even ahead of me - then looking below fromwhere i stand - it was such a fantastic view! the plains below the glacier was utterly - so beautiful! moonlike landssvape pf grey and black, rainbow, patches of green and a river.... it looked like something from the lord of the rings - as i recall, the 7 fellowship went up to cross the paths of caradhras! it was something i imagined climbing up! i need to smoke in that moment and i was distracted and i stepped on a very VERY soft mud and yuckkkkkkk it almost covered my boots but i took it out immediately! but anyway - mud or no mud - it was beautiful.
the idiots who climbed the glacier withouth gears - rj, ashi, dave, jeff and erik!
it was amazing. it was fabulous - i dont even want to talk and think up there - i just want to look!

i want to climb the glacier itself - coz some idiotic guys like jeff, rj, dave, ashi and erik went up all the way to the glacier and hiked on it wihtouth gears! arrghhh i wanna do that too! but before i could do it - maike, janja and wilmke stopped me! arrghhhhhhhhhhh no no no! hahahahah but i didnt of course- if they said its not safe its not safe. then the guys had to come back coz its really slippery and its dangerous withouth the right gears.

we got down and i washed my boots in the river coming out from the glacier. tons of water everday gushes out from sólheimajökull, i can see where the glacier had been before because it carved the landscape arond it and it is retreating so fast, it's getting warmer, the earth is changing and i hope, the glaciers can last for other generations to see its beauty.

3 heads are better than one! :D lol maike, harri and janja!

back in the parking lot, the tour company still wasnt there, maike decided to call them once we get signal and refund our money.

as we changed lighter clothes coz it got warm, we will drive back again to the waterfalls - seljalandsfoss and skógarfoss to have lunch! i will never forget this experience - i had been in the glaciers in the alps in continental europe - much much much higher elevation at 3000 meters but here in iceland you i could see glaciers at sea level and thats unusual in this world and nothing could compare that spectacular moonlike landscape of sólheimajökull glacier.
