The Eyjafjallajökull volcano and the stunning beauty of the landscape in Iceland by Sean Stiegemeier. Music: Jónsi - Kolniður

a group of thirteen adventurous travbuddies will set on a journey and a roadtrip on a cold, windy, stormy, snowy and tempestous weather to travel, explore, hike, ice climb and camp an island which was built by fire and ice: I C E L A N D.

but due to the power of nature and unforseen circumstances, as this trip is being planned and prepared, the eyjafjalla volcano in southern iceland exploded. it was fascinating because it was one of the beautiful forces of nature that man could see in his life but scary at the same time because it left so manny travelers around the world stranded because of the destructive ash it scattered across europe. for a time, it jeopardize our trip planning and i was scared that it might not push through but now, everything seemed back to normal as the the volcano is quietly toning down. then after seing so many videos and pictures of the eruption, it made me/us more determind as ever to visit iceland because it is a once in a lifetime experience. so bring it!

the goal of the roadtrip is to make it as cheap as it can be as iceland is the worlds most expensive country.

the beautiful, haunting, enigmatic, deadly & tempestous weather of iceland in the coast in winter. the rocks are called "reynisdrangar" or the troll rocks which legend says they were actually trolls that were caught by sunlight and turned to rocks.
instead of staying in hotels or hostels, to save money, we will be camping in the cold and windy weather or sleeping in the car.

the routes of our roadtrip is pretty much solid - driving through the great ring road of iceland!

the itineraries and guidelines includes:

Day 1:

Arrival in Reykjavik. Stay in a ho(s)tel.

Day 2:

Pick up rental vehicles and leave Reykjavik to Mount Esja. Plans are to climb Mount Esjan, Þingvellir National Park, Geysir, Selfoss.

hiking to the top of esjan mountain range at about 1000 meters, then drive to thingvellir national park, to geysir and selfoss - our place is to camp is still undertmined.

Day 3:

Selfoss to Seljalandsfoss, Solheimajokull Glacier (hike), Vik (lunch), Skaftafell, Vatnajökull, Jökulsarlón Glacier Lakes

Day 4:

Jökulsarlón Glacier Lakes to Höfn, Breiðdalsvík (lunch), Neskaupstaður

Day 5:

Neskaupstaður to Egilsstadir

Day 6:

Day 7:

Lake Mývatn to Goðafoss, Akureyri (lunch), and then Saudárkrókur

Day 8:

Day 9:

Stadarskali Reykjavik

Day 10:

Last day in Reykjavik and flying back home.

the nothern lights or aurora borealis - as ive read - october is the best month to view this fantastic phenomenon and iceland is one of the blessed places on earth to see them. hopefully, on the trip - we woul be able to get a glimpse of this phenomena!

total roadtrip in kilometers as we estimated = 1,915 kms but the total kilometers of the ring road in iceland is 1,339 kilometers, we counted more as we estimated than the total length of the ring road.

i just wanted to thank maike for co-organizing and coordinating everything with me and to the adventurous souls in travbuddy who's spirits never faltered  despite of the extreme conditions of the trip and for trusting me and maike to handle this almost impossible event. merci.
