A fairy tale of the Lochemse Berg in Lochem Holland
In a deep Hole, near the “Koerbelt” lived three white woman. In Holland we call those woman “witte wieven” White wife’s. They have a strange and scary appearance, they are very skinny, no flesh on the bones! Grey long thin hair, their eyes lay deep in their face. The teeth stick out of their mouth. Just like a skeleton.
During the day they are living in the sand, they become a part of it, but late in the evening they wake up and rise high in the sky.
The white wife’s hunt after young man.
On one day Herbert came back with his horse from the shoeing-smith. Suddenly a water bird flew up and made a lot of noise. Herbert would certainly have fallen into the hole if it was not for the oldest of the white wife’s who caught him. She calmed the horse, so Herbert could return safely to his house.
Herbert and Aleid were not afraid of the white wife’s but the girl next door Johanna warned them for the hole!. Do not go there Herbert she said. But Herbert laughed and said: Who knows, maybe someday they will throw gold in my hands!”
Aleid the sister of Herbert has heard the whole story and wanted to visit the hole as well, but Herbert did not want her to go there. But you know how woman are. A few days later Aleid made a special tasteful Epiphany(driekoningen) cake. She put it in a stoneware dish and put green leaves next to it. Herbert brought the cake into the hole where the white wife’s live, and returned home again.
Johanna the girl next door had a silent crush on Herbert, she wanted a man who is not afraid, who is strong, nice and someone who can protect her. But Albert had his mind made up. He wanted Johanna as his wife. He was jealous, he could buy her anything she likes.. And if Johanna would choose Herbert, he would make their lives like hell.
Why would Christine let Johanna marry Herbert, Albert is also brave enough to enter the white wife’s hole. Albrecht is rich, this was very important for her. Poverty was something she did not want for her daughter. This above all. Love was not important anymore. Christina wanted the two boys to compete for Johanna. Albrecht had to proof that he was as brave as Herbert.
The next day Johanna’s father took Johanna for a walk in the fields and asked her straight which boy she preferred. The day before she had heard the conversation between their parents and did not know what to say. But finally she spoke, it is going to be Herbert. Father was glad he had a smart daughter.
The two boys had to “fight” for Johanna. They had to throw something in the hole, and then stay out of the claws of the white wife’s. The boy who was the fastest and returned as number one back to the farmhouse was the groom to be.
Albrecht was of course confident about himself. He could buy a faster and better horse. And he was smart. He would throw the whetting anvil in the hole from a far distance. And he knew Herbert only has money for a slow old horse. So it would be easy for him to win this battle. Herbert therefore knew he had to work very hard to win this battle.
When Herbert arrived at the hole, the white wife raised up and spread her claws, her mouth wide open and started to follow Herbert. The limb from the trees creaks under the feet from the horse . The white wife was already so close to Herbert that she screamed “You cannot escape anymore”!
Before the farmhouse I will get you!!
Herbert knew his horse was slow, but giving up? No way!! The white wife told Herbert that Albrecht was too afraid and turned around half way. Now he knew Albrecht failed. He had to do his best to hurry to the farmhouse. He already felt the claws of the white wife in his neck while he was entering the yard from the farmhouse. Suddenly he felt something just passing by his ear. It seems the white wife had thrown something after him. But she was returning to the hole again.
Johanna was very glad, she had “won” the man she wanted to marry so very badly.
This was the marriage gift from the white wife. She just wanted to scare Herbert, but it was her revenge. Now you are richer than Albrecht!
This story is from Dutch saga and legends. By Joseph Cohen published in 1921.
The story above is told during a walk on the Lochemse Berg. This is an evening event. It is nice to take a tour one day!! But be careful, they hunt young man!
The House on the picture was from the family van den Ban. Behind the house there is the area where you can "probably meet" the white wife's!
In the shop you can buy delicous bread! And real sweet dutch candy. Also things with a White Wife on it. In the restaurant you can have a simple meal or a nice pancake. Do not order a Heksendrankje, (a drink) because this is very sweet lemonade for CHILDREN and Not for Adults. But my husband ordered one!!! It is also very nice for young children to play in a safe area. Some real animals are walking around, for example monkies. And an alternative playground, sitting on a big beam and throwing with a pillow to eachother. Try to stay on the Beam.
