Sun, sun, and more sun!
My first bird's eye view of Nice from the plane's window has left me quite impressed of how large this resort is. Of course, its not a resort, as a later found out, but a fully fledged city with half a million inhabitants and then the tourists... lots of those as well.
My reason for visiting Nice is so I could study and improve my knowledge of French (my sister and I enrolled into a language school- more of that later), but one does not need a reason to bowl down to the South of France, it should be compulsory!
It was mighty hot (July- August period) so I would advice anyone to stay clear in that period if they can, the city is assaulted by tourists and during the day you would do anything to escape the sun!
As it happened Diana (sister no 2) and I were busy in the mornings as we both took our role as Nice schoolgirls absolutely serious; well, almost.
The homework was tedious and to be honest, after school we were so intensely absorbing the sun, the architecture, the culture, the food, the people, language, visiting nearby places- who had time for that? Not us - and not with Antonella (sister no 3), and her boyfriend Benjamin, in tow!But if the streets look busy during the day- at night Nice becomes truly alive! If you close your eyes, you could envisage Paris, a few hundred years ago (minus the smell of sewers, I think)- the street artists, saltimbanques, dancers, cartoonists, painters, musicians of any kind, there a is a street performance at every step! There is so much to take in, I truly felt like being in a Disney Land for adults!
I felt a wonderful feeling of exultance- and happiness to be in the midst of this all and I didn't want it to end.
Every night we took to walking to the Promenade Des Anglais - and we have actually met a few Romanian people- some from our hometown, Oradea! Talk about a small world...The shops close at 10 pm and there are that many restaurants cafe's, brasserie's to choose from- and they're always full. Now that I have mentioned shopping - there is a designer boutique at virtually every corner. And if you like to shop 'till you drop, I recommend Pink by Roberto Durville, they have amazing shoes and handbags (no 7, Rue de France, Nice).
The whole architecture of Nice is both neo-classical and baroque and the Italian influence has put its print on this charming city. Whatever I write- I still cannot cover what I have seen and it wouldn't do it justice.
Nice is an exciting city of arts and culture and after Paris it has the most Museums in France. It's so easy to get there - there is an international airport on the doorstep and with London a mere one hour away ( New York is only six and a half hours), and now I had a taste of it I will enjoy many more vacations there. Now I've been told there is a possiblity that Antonella (sister no 3) and her boyfriend are considering relocating there, wow, I am on cloud nine and counting!
Famous landmarks and museums: Theater Opera, Place Massena, Place Rosinni, Place garibaldi, The gardens of Chimiez, Musee matisse, Musee Chagall, Palaice Lascaris, Theatre de la Photographie et de L'image, The Museum of Contemporary and Modern Art, The Museum of Art and History... to name a few.
Nice is a stone throw away by train to Cannes, St. Tropez, Monte Carlo, Eze, St Jean Cap Ferrat, the whole of the French Riviera is on your doorstep.
So- what are you waiting for?
