From Odda to Haugesund
July 9, 2008
We got up early and after breakfast we headed south to Haugesund.
Approx. 20 - 25 km south of Odda, right at the main road RV 13, you find the Latefossen water fall. A majestic twin water fall. The total height is 165 meters and it's a well known tourist attraction in the area. Therefore the small parking area was already crowded with cars, busses, motorhomes and trailers. Anyway it's really worth a view. Due to the heavy rains the days before it was more impressive than it usually is in July.
After taking some photos we headed further to Haugesund where we went for some shopping first. We were out off fresh melk and butter. And of course we bought some of the yummy cinnamon cookies for coffee ;)
The campground is located at the banks of the North Sea and close to Haraldshaugen which is a huge monument. Snorre's sagas of the kings mention the site where Harald Fairhair is buried. In the nineteenth century it was believed the place described by Snorre had been located. This is where the national monument of the unification of Norway was erected in 1872, during the millennial celebrations of Norway's unification into one kingdom. The monument is located 2km north of the town centre.
At the same area of "Haraldshaugen" you find an old stone cross (Krosshaugen) which is dated around 1000 and has been eraised by the first christians.
For me Haugesund is a special place. Usually you have strong winds there and it's great just to sit there on the rocks watching the sailing boats, ferries, cruise ships and various other ships.
In the evening we enjoyed an amazing sunset.
