When we left the mountains behind us, the weather got better and better and when we arrived Heddal it was very nice. Heddal is the home of a famous stave church (beneath the ones in Borgund and Ornes). Addional to the church you find a beautiful museum of local history only a few minutes by feet from the church.
The church is a triple nave stave church and is Norway's largest stave church. It was constructed at the beginning of the 13th century. After the reformation the church was in a very poor condition, and a restoration took place during 1849 - 1851.
Well, it was too early to look for a campground but we didn't want to drive any further, so we decided to have a look at the church and the museum. Except the church in Nore - which was tiny - Klaus had never been to a stave church before and was impressed about the architecture. In the whole building you won't find a metal nail or screw - everything's from wood.
