Rounding Cape Horn
December 17, 2000
We rounded Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America today on the way north to Chile. ape Horn was first rounded by a Dutchman named Willem Schouten in 1616 while searching for a trade route to the Orient. He named it after his birthplace in Holland, The cape itself is actually a point on an island, which is part of th Tierra del Fuego Archipelago. It is an important breeding site for Magellanic penguins, but we did not get to see the penguins or stop at the Horn. The weather did not permit a landing.
