Lahaina-Pali Trail
I don’t normally like following plans and schedules when it comes to vacations! I do that enough at work! On this trip to Maui, I completely winged it! I was looking through a Maui hiking guide and found the Lahaina-Pali Trail under the advanced section so I decided to give it a go! The trail starts near Ma’alaea Harbor and traverses the West Maui Mountains to a place called “Thousand Peaks” in Olowalu. Great surf spot btw! The trail is a little dangerous – steep, loose rocks, falling rocks, slippery when wet, high winds, heat exposure, high cliffs, very remote, no cell phone reception and a huge fire hazard! I didn’t have a GPS with a panic button but I probably should’ve! Next time!
There are dozens of wind turbines at the mid-point and highest point of the trail. It was very windy up there but also very relaxing! There’s something about wind turbines that I find peaceful. The views from this area are breathtaking! I saw some Humpback Whales jumping out of the water! It was awesome! I bet the sunset from this point would be unforgettable!
Throughout the trail I saw the charred remains of Keawe trees that were burnt during a fire in 2006. It was a sad sight for me because as a child growing up on Maui, I remember the green Keawe trees that made this side of the mountain especially beautiful.
Overall, the Lahaina-Pali Trail was a tough hike but still a lot of fun! It took a little over two hours to complete! I’m glad I did it and I’ll definitely do it again!
