The beautiful town of Kotor
September 1, 2009
The old town sits between Mt Sv Ivan and a corner of Kotor Bay. The town wall was started in the 9th century and as you enter the old town through Vrata od Mura (sea gate constructed in 1555) you will find a labyrinth of marbled lanes. On hidden piazzas there are charming bars and restaurants. And of course souvenir shops and churches. One church in particular caught my attention, the sweet little St Luke´s church at Trg Sv Luke. It was constructed in 1195 as a catholic church, but between 1657 and 1812 a Catholic and Orthodox alter stood side by side and each faith took turns in holding services. In 1812 it was given to the Orthodox church. Fragments of 12th century frescos still survive. This little church is really worth a visit and the priest who is greeting you at the door is very friendly.
The old town of Kotor is very charming and picturesque, but avoid the tourist season. When we were there hundreds of cruise ship tourists poured in and the town lost a bit of its charm.
