Počitelj - Back to the 15th century
September 3, 2009
Počitelj was founded in the 15th century and was a place where the Turkish caravans could rest. It was the first Turkish town founded in Herzegovina. This picturesque little place situated in the steep rocky hillside really takes you back to the 15th century. The building of an old hamam is still there, but unfortunately closed. You are welcome to visit the mosque or you can climb the hill up to the citadel.
Following the bombing in the 1990´s conflict, Pocitelj's sixteenth-century master- works of Islamic art and architecture were dynamited. Today much of it has been repaired. The old stone homes that remain in ruins add to the antique atmosphere of the place.
Back at the bottom of the hill vendors are just too happy to sell you locally made honey, brandy and different kind of fruit. If you don´t have the local money you can pay with euro (1:0,5) or kuna (1:4), euro being the best deal.
