A nice weekend in Den Helder

A pond close to the campground
The west coast of the Netherland's North Sea Coast is more beautiful than the german North Sea Coast. You have those endless beaches and dunes from Den Helder in the north until Zeeland in the south. If you wanna go to the beaches in Germany you have to take a ferry to the East Frisian Islands. Between the islands and the mainland you have the Wadden Sea which is mostly muddy.
The distance between the german coast and the netherlands' one is nearly equal. So, no question where to go ;) Another plus factor is that dogs are allowed on the beach (as long as they are leashed).

On fridays I have to work only until 1 p. m. and we wanted to leave home right when I arrived from work. Therefore I prepared the camper on thursday already and Klaus just had to put in the last stuff like food, drinks and the dog's bed on friday morning. But it was as usual, too many things to do before we could leave. Finally at 2.30 p.m. we headed west to the Netherlands.
Because we were trapped in 2 traffic jams in the cities of Groningen and Joure we arrived Den Helder not before 5 p.m. We checked in at the campground "De Donkere Duinen" which is located in the outskirts of Den Helder at the edge of the nature protection area "De Donkere Duinen". The campground lies in the midst of a forest and the distance to the beach is about 1.

After setting up our camping table and chairs we had some coffee before we headed to the beach. It's a nice walk through the dunes where you find lots of biking trails which makes it easy to walk.
The beach was nearly empty when we arrived since it was almost dinner time. Most of the people went home after a hot day on the beach just a few sea gulls were hunting for fish.
Since there were no people anymore we unleashed the dog and he took the chance to chase the sea gulls (he never gets some :p) which was funny to watch. After an amazing sunset we went back to the campground for cooking dinner.
The sun woke us up next day at 8 a.m. and we decided to have a lazy day on the beach. Just sunbathing, swimming in the North Sea and relaxing. Maybe a little walk on the beach ;) After some weeks with lots of work we deserved a lazy weekend.
I'm a beach person. Not only in summer when it's hot and you can sunbath and swimming. I like it most in autumn or winter when the storms rage. For me there's nothing better as a walk on the beach then. Feeling the power of the wind and the freedom. AHHHHH, I guess I must go to Den Helder again in October / November again ;) But for now it was sunny and hot with light winds. A perfect summer day :D

Cosy campground in the midst of a forest
The campground "De Donkere Duinen" is located in the outskirts of Den Helder at the edge of a nature protection area. There's an entrance to the beach at the rear.
You find approx. 200 places for motorhomes or trailers with connection to water and electricity (on some places cable tv aswell) plus a field for tents without any connections.
The sanitary buildings are a bit old but very clean. You have to bring your own toilet paper which isn't common in Germany and confused me a bit ;)
It's very quiet there even in the peak season. A nice place to relax and have a good time.
A plus factor is that you can bring your dog with you although you have to pay a fee for it.
