A Day Amongst the Sakura in…Brooklyn

Brooklyn Travel Blog | Travelogue | Travel Journal

Every year the Japanese celebrate the Sakura Matsuri, or Cherry Blossom Festival. Although, we are on the other side of the world, my friend and I decided to celebrate the opening of the gorgeous flowering pink trees at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Flowers, flowers everywhere!!!

Vanessa and I overjoyed and enveluped by the sakura!

My friend, Vanessa (“openbeing” on here), and I met at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden at 11:30AM, as it is free admission into the gardens from 10-12PM on Saturdays.  To find out more about the BBG visit: http://www.bbg.org.

I had been to the BBG once before, but it was in the fall and most of the flowers were no longer in bloom.  Still, the park had left quite an impression on me and I had wanted to return again in the spring.  This was Vanessa’s first time at the park.

It is easy to lose one’s connection with nature while living in New York City.

I found myself craving green and asked Vanessa if she’d accompany me to the Sakura Matsuri.  She gladly accepted.  We agreed to bring some treats along with ourselves, so that we could enjoy a picnic there as well.

The sakura, or commonly known as cherry blossoms, in my opinion are one of nature’s best gifts.  Although they are fleeting, only blooming once a year for a couple of weeks, during their bloom they contribute an immeasurable amount of beauty to their surroundings (of course, I am biased, since pink is my favorite color to begin with).

Hanami is the Japanese cultural tradition of viewing and cherishing each moment of the cherry blossom season; from the first buds to the brilliant blossoms to the petals falling like pink snow.  We arrived during the peak of their bloom and what a site to behold!

However, not only were the sakura in bloom, just about every other flower in the park were too (minus the roses and lotus flowers).

The sakura were my favorite, while the lilacs were Vanessa’s.  We began to have our picnic underneath the sakura, when a security guard informed us that no food or drink was allowed in the park.  Thankfully, Prospect Park was nearby and we just moved over there.  It was so lovely to spend hours gossiping, eating, enjoying nature and not worrying about time.  We even talked some about our upcoming trip to China/Tibet and how fantastic it will be!  I left our day together feeling more relaxed and at peace with life than I have in a very long time.

In joy or sadness, flowers are our constant friends.  Prepare yourself for beauty overload in the following pictures…

Hi Andi! I was at the Sakura festival too this year, it was so beautiful! My computer's wallpaper is actually a picture I took of the blossoms against a cloudy, white sky. What a great day I had there, I'm glad you got to take advantage also!
