Me and Marni (sister) at dinner the night before the wedding
I'm back in the land of pura vida after a fun, whirlwind vacation with the family in California. My cousin Julie's wedding was just beautiful and it was great to be with the family over the holidays, even though it seemed weird to be taking a vacation from the pura vida. The weather here has definitely ruined me for ever going back to winters in Wisconsin, as I was freezing the entire time in not-so-sunny California. Now I'm back to being my usual sweaty self in the delicious 85 degree heat.

I got back to Liberia just before the new year, in time to take a nap and a shower, and head to Playa del Coco with some friends until dawn. It was a pretty sweet way to bring in the new year. Today I met up with Amy, Gary and Andy Stein, our family friends since before I was born.
Mi familia with the bride and groom!
They were staying near here for the past week and a half and I was happy I got to see them before they left. I showed them Liberia and then we went to Rincon de la Vieja, a national park with waterfalls and boiling mud pots about 45 minutes away. It was really beautiful and great to see the Steins, especially after leaving my own family in the states! But after a full day of traveling and almost three nights without a good night's sleep, I'm exhausted.

And I better get some rest soon because Andy and I are going to Monteverde/Santa Elena tomorrow, bright and early! The Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the only major Costa Rican destinations that I still haven't been to and I can't wait. Apparently there is some problem with a bridge on the way there (Noemy said she saw it on the news), but we'll make it.
Me and Barry, my best friend and second half cousin once removed or something like that.
Somehow. Go figure. Typical Tico style. Once we arrive despite the hurdles on the road, we'll figure out our plans to take a tour of a coffee plantation, a night hike through the cloud forest and have more adventures in the rainforest for the next few days. Can't wait.

It's going to be hard to get back into the swing of teaching on Tuesday, but I think I'll survive. It wasn't as hard to start speaking Spanish again as I thought it would be (after not speaking it for almost a week), so that's encouraging. The tour guide today complimented my Spanish and took my business card so I can give him a few private English lessons (and hit on me, but what else is new). So that will be good to get some new tutoring clients, as I'm going to have to rake in the cash to pay for all of my crazy and wild adventures. But apparently I shouldn't have too much trouble, since I'm "coronga," as the tour guide told me (cute). Go figure... It's good to be back.

The year 2009 has been very sweet to me. I wish all of my family, friends and fellow travelers a wonderful, peaceful, safe, exciting, happy, healthy new year in 2010!
