The island
August 13, 2009
After 10hrs trip by boat we finally arrived at Astypalea at 4.30am! We had already payed for the hotel so a bed was waiting for us :))
There is also an airport but tooo diffucult to find a flight available during July and August (when all Greeks are having their vacations) so the boat trip is the only choice.
Astypalea is situated between the borders of Dodekanisa and Cyclades and has the most beautiful Chora (the center of the island). It has the shape of a butterfly devided the island into 2 sides and its full of churches, small and big ones, almost 365!!And for those who are afraid of snakes Astypalea is the perfect place to visit since its the only greek island where you will find zero snakes ;)
Every year 14-15 August there is a big fiesta going around the island especially around the castle. For Christians 15 August is the celebration of Virgin Mary and that night the church Panagia i Portaitissa, not far away from the castle entrance, organize a big fiesta with lots of food and music. There was no chance for us to lose this festival ;)

great place, great view
The best way to end your day after some walks around the castle is to have a drink to this cafe looking at the castle at night. There are two levels try to find a seat at the terrace its better but colder so have some extra clothes with you.

Best view appartments in Astypalea
These studios appartments have the best view to the castle of Astypalea, clean, hot water all day, kitchen and fridge so you can keep some water cold-milk-fruits, laundry available and the best location ever, 5min walking distance from the center. The only thing that you will find annoying is the effort you have to put to climb the steps from the bus station to the studios with your (heavy?) suitcase, but the sweet owner Anna will help you :)
Chill out cafe-bar
Archipelagos has a great view to the castle of Astypalea and in combination with the music it is the best place to chill out during the sunset.Try to be early there so you can find a seat with view.
The bread, cheese, jam are all home made the breakfast though it is quite expensive there..
Try also the sweets, they are so yummy!Dont forget Rakomelo, it was the best rakomelo I tried while I was on the island.

this is what was left , I was ve…
Recommented for the view
This restaurant is part of the Akti appartments. It has absolutely a great view to the old port and the back side of the castle. The menu includes domestic recipes like greek salad with chlori(cheese), chtapodokeftedes(octopusballs), ntomatokeftedes(tomatoballs) and try the red wine it goes perfect with the view!;)
beach hopping
Astypalea is a very beautiful island but the beaches, the good ones, are very hard accesible. An easy way but expensive is to take a boat from the old port and in about 1hr you are in the turquoise waters...
There 2 routes and 2 boats that do the routes by turns.
1 route:island Kounoupes and island Koutsomitis(the best beach of the island)
2 route: beach Agios Ioannis and beach Kaminakia
All the beaches except Kaminakia where there is a famous restaurant (Linda) dont have any facilities so you have to carry definetly umbrella, mat, water and fruits if you like.
Now the bad news: the route costs 17euros per person!!
Routes start at 11:00 and you are back at 18:00
You have to book your seat 1 day in advance!
