Huacachina - Day 1 - Morning bus then relax....
Well as it turned out, neither of the options I was thinking about before getting on a bus to Lima ended up winning. Once at the Cruz del Sur terminal in Lima, at about 5 a.m., I discovered that there was a 7 a.m. bus to Ica, and that I could definitely get a bus from Nazca to Cusco (all Lima to Cusco buses go via Nasca anyway) so hanging around there for a couple of hours and then a 4ish hour bus ride to Ica was the winner.
Huacachina is a little oasis in the middle of the desert, just outside of Ica, as in only about $1 US away. So I found a fellow traveller, Rose from Wales, that was heading that way and split a cab. We'd both heard of the same hostel Casa de Arena so that was the winner.
After all that bus riding, the rest of the day pretty much consisted of hammocks, swimming in the pool and reading books. Not really spectacular stuff, but a pretty novel location to do it in when you're just surrounded by sand dunes everywhere. I'll save sand boarding and dune buggy riding for tomorrow
