The sights of Melbourne!

Melbourne Travel Blog › entry 3 of 5 › view all entries

Here is a brief write-up of our travels to Australia last year to see my family. Melbourne is one of my three homes (aside from Austin, TX and London, UK)! We spent time with family and toured around a bit! We go back to Australia every year or every other year, and typically get out and about to check out the sites. I lived there from ages 8 through 23, and it's always interesting to go back and see the changes that the city goes through.

The sights of Melbourne!

Melbourne is a wonderful city, in fact it is Marvelous! When I used to live here, I spent many days and nights in the inner city exploring its many facets and enjoying it culinary delights! The many streets and laneways offer a myriad of shopping opportunities, and the ethnically diverse elements of its people offer a plethora of foods that will satisfy any taste bud!

When we were there, I took a day to walk around the city and take photos of some of its more recognizable landmarks. Still, it is such a big city that there is a good photo no matter where you look!

Melbourne has excellent public transport, and is covered by trains, buses and trams. You can purchase day passes which will get you to most of the interesting areas. Avoid public transport at rush hour as the system seems to be plagued with not enough capacity to handle the demands of the ever-growing Melbourne population.

The city is a really bustling place during work hours (i.e. 8am to 6pm Monday through Friday).

You'll see yuppie bankers and laborers and folks from all walks of life there. It's a bit quieter during the weekends except during the evenings, when the city's nightlife takes over.

Melbourne itself consists of a central business district ("CBD"), which is surrounded by inner and outer suburbs. Many of these suburbs are dominated by specific ethnic groups. For example, the suburb of St. Kilda is predominately Jewish, so expect to see some great kosher restaurants and supermarkets there. In Coburg and Footscray, you'll run into mostly Middle-Eastern businesses. Explore the city and pick a piece of the world in which to dine!
