Austrian village from the air, on approach to Vienna after a really long time in the air...
I love layovers. The next best thing to staying in a place long enough to get to know it is the "running tour" to get a taste of the place between planes. Always with that added excitement of racing the non-refundable flight at the end of the stay : )

Well, because of weather back in the US, my 10 hour layover turned into 6 hours...  That's okay, I still ran into town to look around.  You can get into the city on an airport train (the CAT) in 16 minutes, so not too much time wasted in transit.  Got in a quick loop around town before heading back... and most importantly, lunch!   Never did find those little cans of Vienna sausages anywhere...

There are a lot of statues in Vienna. Composers and artists, mayors and statesmen, kings and officials of past empires based there.
Layover escape - Exit Vienna!
.. And lots of parks. At the edge of town a ring of forests with trails and low hills. Sorry the pictures are kind of washed out, it was a gray, overcast day, I came in at the end of a storm. The kind of day when the sky is actually more white than gray, and the city is seen mostly as silhouettes against this bright backdrop.

After my run through town I felt that it was a pleasant place, clean and efficient, almost a little sterile. Probably because I've spent the last few vacations in the Balkans. I always look forward to my first encounter with Croatia, usually in the farthest gate of the farthest terminal. I hear my first Croatian spoken, a sound that I miss, usually endless, animated conversations about the boarding time versus the departure time, prolonged by the inevitable delays in Croatia Airlines flight times : ) This time it took them only an extra hour to kick the tires or do whatever they do, and after 30 hours, was finally on my way to Zagreb!
