Delft an old town just under Den Haag. Delft is built in the year 1200 and in this time Delft build a wall around the town. In the year 1246 Delft became city rights. What can you do on a Monday? And when the temperature is about 29 degrees? Something on the water would be nice. Delft offers Boat trips trough Delft. You can combine this one with a visit to the Porceleyne fles. This is a very famous and old factory for Delft Blue. The factory itself is not very big, but if you are interested and you want to paint you can book a workshop. It is a bit expensive because Delft blue is very expensive. From the factory you can take the blue train back to the centre of Delft.
A small impression of the boat trip. We took half the trip because we went to visit the Porceleyne fles.
The tour office is at the Koornmarkt or you can hop on the boat at the tourist office. The price of a combined ticket is 12,75 Euro p.p. This is the boat, the porceleyne fles, and the blue line bus back.
The Canal tour starts at 11.15 or 13.00 hour or 14.00 hour.
The beginning of the tour on the Canal, I will try to describe what I have seen. During this trip you will underpass about 20 bridges. After the first bridge you enter the old Trade harbor next to the house where they made butter. On top of the building you can see a butter barrel. On the left you can see the butter bridge this one is about 100 meters long. On the right side there is the house from Johannes Vermeer. He was a very famous Dutch painter.
Than you will enter the Hippolytus neighborhood, this is opposite the big church. Hippolytus was the patron saint of the old church. They started to build the church in 1240 and finished it in 1600. You can see the different stones they used, and the different styles. Some famous people are buried in this church, like Piet Hein, Maarten tromp and Johannes Vermeer.
On the left side you can see the oldest house (painted black) of Delft. In the Voorstraat nr. 5. Build in 1521. In the year 1536 there has been a huge fire in Delft, almost 80% of the houses were destroyed..
Next we will underpass a strange white bridge, this is the Visbrug (fish bridge) this one is build in Venetian style.
On the right side there is the building of the old soap factory Bousquet on number 92. Now we can see in front of us the St Stevens bridge, he was the protector of the beer brewers. At the end of the canal you turn left.
Now we have passed the Begijnhofbrug, on the right side is the Begijnen monastery next to nr.219.
In Delft there are 13 monastery . Sailing on the old canal you can see the old tower right in front of you. This tower is bending over 2 meters forward, and 1,2 meter aside. So a very strange thing to see.. In this tower There is one of the largest church bells we have in Holland. The weight is about 9000 kilo.
On the Left we see the st Agatha monastery, this is called Prinsenhof. This is the famous place where Willem van Oranje was murdered by Balthasar Gerard in 1584. Today it is a museum.
On the right side in the embankment you will see a wooden door. This was necessary in times of danger, so people could escape from there.
On the right side you can see a building This was for the Dike Counts. They have a lot of coat of arms above the front door.
On the right side as well nr. 147 is the smallest house of Delft (she did not mention the width but I think it is about 2 meter) which has two front doors.
Now you are passing the smallest and lowest bridge. The boat has almost no space left. After passing the bridge you see the Orphan house for girls on the left, and for the boys on the right.
The building with the white wall is one of the 13th monastery, this one is the Barbara monastery. Build in 1550.
Then you will pass the oldest stone bridge 1573. On your left hand you see the old prison of Delft. Next to it you will find The armentarium of the VOC. 1692. On the right side of the canal there is the main building of the VOC. If you see the small windows and the age of the building you can almost see the people sitting at their table writing and signing document with a feather. This building was build in 1631.
Now you will sail under a bridge that will bring you to the Rijn Schie Cannal. This was the main connection between Den Haag and Rotterdam. We sailed about 700 meters were we left the ship.
It is not a very long tour but it was long enough to get a good impression of the old town of Delft.
