Took 4 hours of waiting for the 0600 to Alexandria but after the sleepless night we had endured I treated Claire to a pair of first class ticket for the journey a bargain at 10 pounds for the three hour trip. It was just aswell we went first class because the carriages date back to before the war and are not in the best shape at least we had a cushioned seat and air conditioning unlike the poor buggers in second class. Almost thought everything was going to plan until someone told us we had arrived at Alex it wasn’t until we got off that we realized that we were one stop early so another suicidal taxi ride finally got us there by 1030. Checked into our hotel the Crillon with nice view of the seafront however the smell of saltwater and rubbish at low tide is awful. Just wanted to take it easy today and get used to the temperature before heading inland to the Siwa oasis tomorrow. Walked along the seafront, from the library of Alexandria to the Fort Qaitbay which was built on the site of the Great Lighthouse of Alexandria. For a city with so much history Alex really has bugger all to see but served its purpose and we even managed an afternoon kip to catch up on lost sleep from the last two weeks.
