Climbing in the New River Gorge

On long weekends while working in Tennesse, I went rock climbing, hiking, skydiving, caving, hit the beach, took scenic drives (and more!) in the surrounding states.

Climbing in the New River Gorge

Me rapelling
I drove to the New River Gorge Bridge near Fayetteville.  I stopped at a fire tower in Virginia along the way, hoping to get a nice view, but it was too hazy to see anything.  I loved driving through West Virginia - its pretty, very green with lots of hills (mountains) and rocks.  I met up with a rock climbing outfitter and spent a half day climbing the sandstone outcrops near the river.  It was a ton of fun.  I repelled over the edge and just hung out in midair amongst the tree tops.  Very cool.  I climbed a few different climbs, including one that was like crawling up a chimney.  You climbed it by putting one leg on each wall or with your butt on one wall and both feet on the other.  I didn't quite make it up.  Near the top, the walls were just a little far apart for me to reach.  That night I camped nearby and went to visit the bridge and drive along the river the next day.
