First leg of flight

A two week cruise and tour to Alaska, featuring our first cruise, first time on a modern train, and first time to Canada and Alaska.

First leg of flight

Fresno Yosemite International Airport recently added a display to look like the giant redwoods of Sequoia National Park.

Arriving at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport was an easy in, and easy through the check-in process.  And even going the X-ray and body screening process was easier this time.  I removed my suspenders because of the metal parts, and made it through the x-ray machine just fine without setting off the alarms or losing my pants!  Then it was just a matter of waiting for the plane another hour and twenty minutes.  When we got to the gate there were only five others waiting, but by the time our flight started boarding there were 56.  The rather small Conair 700 only seats 66 passengers so we had a few empty seats in the economy plus area.  The seats, although still fairly narrow, were comfortable enough for the slightly under one hour flight to Los Angeles.  Smooth flight, even over the low mountain tops that separate the San Joaquin valley from the Los Angeles basin.  I'm carrying my GPS unit with me and checked it at a few places during the flight and noted that we were flying at about 550 mph at 24,000 feet elevation. Arrival at LAX was smooth and quick and we deplaned (is that a word?) at about 6:45 a.m.  Now we could find our way to the proper gate and wait for our next flight.

Small but easy to use airport.
Fresno Yosemite International Airport handles the central San Joaquin valley’s needs in Fresno, California. Nine airlines use this facility; six car rental companies do business here and there are taxis and scheduled bus lines. There is only one terminal and less than 20 gates with small waiting areas for each one.

The TSA uses two check through points to screen passengers, although frequently there is only one open. At the ticket registration area only one or two airlines are active at any given time.

This is a small city airport. And even though it is small in all of the ways you can count, the workers and pleasant, and fairly knowledgeable. We have used or help friends use this airport several times.
Good small distance jet
This nice 66 passenger jet, designed for short and mid length flights was very comfortable with two seats on each side of the isle. The center armrests can be brought up and out of the way to allow a slightly wider feel. There is plenty of stand-up height along the isle and good sized storage for carry-on luggage above the seats. Two attendants handle the drink cart and the plane has one lavratory in the rear. Our flight from Fresno to Los Angeles, and then again from Los Angeles to Vancouver was on this type of plane. United served complimentary water, juice or soda.
