Fairbanks - relaxing

This was the view from our third floor room looking north across the Chena River.

We're on our own today, seeing that most folks are flying out.  We decided to visit the Museum of the North at the University of Alaska and then try to get to the Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart stores in town.  We don't have Fred Meyer stores in our area and supposedly the Wal-Mart is the second largest in the nation.  Hard to believe in a small place like Fairbanks.

Cloudy and overcast almost all day with even a few sprinkles and a very cold breeze.  I think they said only up to 50 degrees F. today.

We had slept in and by the time we were ready to eat it was close to lunch time.  The gift shop had a couple of small quickie type things so we got them.

The outfitters desk suggested that with the stops we wanted to do it would be much cheaper to call AirLink to drive us around.

Looking more easterly from our room.
It would be half of what a taxi would cost and the Princess shuttles didn't even go where we wanted, with the exception of the museum.  So we called then and waited just a few minutes for them to pick us up and off we went to the museum.

A great place to visit in Fairbanks is the University of Alaska, Museum of the North.  We spent more than three hours strolling, taking pictures, and enjoying the great displays.

Then after calling and having AirLink pick us up again and delivering us to a large shopping area we ate lunch at a Subway sandwich shop.  We strolled through a large Wal-Mart and then a Fred Meyers before eating dinner at Chili's.  Back to Wal-Mart where we picked up a couple of things to eat over the next day and a half.

Back at our hotel we spent the evening writing, reading and relaxing while we waited to see if we would see any northern lights.  At midnight we went outside to see if anything would show.  The clouds had thinned out and the stars slowly were becoming more visible so our hopes were high, even though the forecast for the Aurora was nil.  We stayed out until about one thirty and although we thought we saw a faint trail above our heads where the hotel staff said it would be, it wasn't enough to take a picture of.
