Eight days in August: Normandy and Bretagne are a relative nearby destination from where I live. Have been to Normandy before. Both in Normandy and in Bretagne is much more to see than we had time for :-)

Breda (Netherlands) - Rouen, Normandy (France)

Because I had seen some photos of Rouen (which I liked very much) we decided to take an overnight stop in Rouen. As we left Breda at about 9.30 am it took about 5 hours to get there (including a lot of rain and two stops).

Rouen turned out to be as pretty as I hoped and expected regarding the photos I saw a couple of weeks before.

The cathedral is beautiful and well kept.

We were staying in a lovely hotel (Hotel de la Cathédrale) in the city centre. We walked around for a couple of hours, had a great dinner and watched the free light show at the Cathedral (the so called 'Impressionist Nights').

I will surely recommend to visit Rouen for one or two days!

Dank je Petra. Ik had vooraf een paar foto's van iemand gezien, was er zelf ook weg van! Net mooi voor een dag. Als ik meer tijd had gehad had ik het museum nog wel willen bezoeken, maar ja, het was toch al heel leuk!

Charming hotel in historic Rouen
We made an internet reservation for this (2 star) hotel. It turned out to be a bull's eye :-)

Situated in the historic city centre of Rouen, across a side entrance of the cathedral. Charming, clean, very affordable, friendly staff, GREAT breakfast (bread, cake, cereals, lots of fresh fruit, real fresh juice, cheeses, ham, eggs, etc. etc.)!!

The street is a pedestrian area, but they have an agreement with the 'Hotel de ville' parking, you pay a parking fee of only 5 euros a night (from 6.00 pm to 10.30 am), it's a (less than) 5 minutes walk.

Mayor sights of the city are on walking distance.

French cuisine, affordable
Staying an overnight in Rouen we didn't want to have dinner at the 'touristic' Place du Vieux Marché. We asked in the hotel for advice and the lady came up with this 'right around the corner' place.

After a short walk we found 'Dufour' in an historical building. Nice atmosphere inside.

We choose a 4 courses menu (€ 39). We started with an cocktail (an Americano) accompanied by an amuse: a small puff-pastry with anchovy.
Then the menu started: we choose 2 different entries: oysters and goose liver (we changed plates half way ;-)) Both very good.

As maincourse we had sea-devil and sole-meunière. The sea-devil was great. The sole was good.

Then a choise of French cheeses and finally a dessert (I had mille-feuilles with raspberries, mmmm.....).

We drank a nice bottle of Muscadet and a glass of red wine with the cheese.

Next morning we thanked the lady at the hotel who recommended this restaurant!
