Middle East Stop-over

Our four engines streamed vapor trails southeast from Germany to cross several eastern European countries and intercept the northern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Distant islands off the right wing probably belonged to Greece. We skirted the Black Sea and I saw what might have been the mouth of the Danube River in Ukraine. After passing Istanbul and Ankara, Turkey, we banked more southerly into eerily calm skies over a turbulent Middle East. Low clouds shrouded the Tigres River as it meandered toward Baghdad. Darkness fell before I could spot its confluence with the Euphrates. In Iranian airspace, the orange-yellow lights of oil rigs flickered on the desert floor somewhere outside Abadan. We finally began our descent over the Persian Gulf, a little too far east to see the lights of Basra, Umm Qasr, or Kuwait City.

Though the flight only lasted five hours and forty-five minutes, it spanned thousands of years of world history and triggered the imagination into awe and wonder more than most global air routes.

Coach seating on the nearly full Airbus was rather cramped and uncomfortable. It gave the feel of being an early astronaut strapped into a Gemini capsule since my claustrophobic window-seat row was two-wide. Leg and elbow room was minimal and the seat-back in front of me often bumped the brim of my baseball cap. A two-hour stop-over with an aircraft change broke up the trip nicely. Bahrain had a spacious air-conditioned transit terminal. Ultra-modern duty free shops, news stands, restaurants, cafes, and internet access rooms all seemed grossly overpriced compared to the western world but provided a great place to stretch, stroll, and explore.
