Emerging from the dark

After we had our fill of living the life of a gopher we emerged through the same cave door that we entered.  It temperature change was shocking!  As we were touring the tunnels inside, outside it had begun to rain so the humidity was now at 100% and the thermometer still read 93 degrees.  The heat was stifling (but don't feel too bad as it was only one of 4 days this entire summer where we had warm weather).

On the way back to the Nature Center and before leaving we took a detour to take in the vistas from the lookout tower that we passed on the way in.  With a steep climb with so many steps in hot weather we were only too happy to reach the top. We were rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding area - overlooking fields and pastures, forests, and roads.  Looking down was a bit unnerving for anyone who hates heights.  Now that we were in daylight it was funny to see how dirty each of us had gotten.  Covered with remnants of the floor of the cave we were caked with dust and mud and probably a few other things in our hair that I would rather not think about.  What a fun time we had.... I'll return to this cave next year as it continues to expand as more tunnels are discovered and excavated.
