borneo =)
July 21, 2009
Me and my boyfriend rasmus started our trip in a 12 hour flight from Denmark to Singapore. Having to wait in Singapore for 12 hour for our next flight, we meet up with rasmus old work buddy, who had been in denmark in a work program for 6 months, but had returned home to Singapore again.
He and his wife came and picked us up at the airport and showed us around the amazing city =) From school i had learned that Singapore is the only city in the world who has survived just by being a taxless markedplace, and I was exited to see how big and clean and beautiful it was !
Next day we went to the airport and on our plane flying to Kuching, Borneo. We were both very tired, and when we arrived it was night time - and we just went straight to bed at the Mederka palace Hotel. There was a lot of commotion since some royal people were coming. Next morning we ate breakfast at the hotel, which was great ! Im not really into nudles and beans in the morning, but they also had a vestern table with typical vestern breakfast = eggs, toast, yoghurt etc. also since im a veggietarian I was surprised to see so much veggie food, I was told its because theres a lot of monks, and buddhists in Kuching, and in all of Borneo as well =)
Shortly afterwards we went to the airport again and flew to Kota Kinabalu. We went to an ugly 4 star hotel which was located on top of a mall !! Our airconditioning system was dripping water and no one would help us with it, so we had to put out towels, which sucked ass.
The city was very disapointing, it was very dirty and smelled like poop/pee. Also everywhere were unclean malls with dirty massage cliniqués.
We had been told that most people preferre to stay in Kota K instead of Kuching, which i DONT get at all, after having been there!!
Next day we went island jumping. No one knew where we were going, even though we had booked in advance - But eventually we were sent to Mamutik Island - which is a nice little island. We went swimmig in the blue water, and snorkled a bit, which was dissapointing compared to egypt end the red sea. Later on the shore of the island we saw a BIG komodoveran, which was exiting. We had payed to visit 2 islands and eat breakfast at the 2 island. BUT the weather got bad and we were told the trip to the next island and the breakfast was cancelled with no refund - which sucked even more.
We came back kinda disapointed and desided to eat itallian food, and so we did. And to our suprise it tasted GREAT, who knew people so far away from italy could cook so alike?! =)
Next day we flew to sabah, and went straight from the airport to turtle island (Seligan Island), it took 40 minuttes drive and 40 minuttes boatride, the boatride was a lot of fun to me.
When we arrived at the island it took my breath away, it was PERFECT! Stunning with golden sand, blue/green clear water, and nice accomendations - and we had been told from home that there would be no bathrooms ! but the bungalows were really nice, we had private bathrooms, big beds and aircondition =)
Later we took a walk around this exiting Island. We looked at the egg hachery and saw a baby turtle born at day, but it had no chance of survival since it was daytime - which almost broke my heart.
We were told to wait untill nightfall before we were to see a mother turtle give birth - and later release baby turtles to sea. I could barely wait !!
This Island was SO stunning much more than mamutik - and we weren't even here to see the island like on mamutik, we were here to see the turtles !! The people on seligan island were so proud of their island - which was nice to observe since it seems like many people living on borneo donesn't care what happens to their islands beautiful nature and just cares about money (I dont blame them, they don't have much, but its sad anyway) also i dont get why people without an education get 5 children, when thay can't afford for most of them to get an education, which proberbly will lead them to a bad maybe if they are lucky acceptable existence - Their circle of poverty is going no where - I felt lucky our taxes are so high that every one in Denmark get an education and no one is left behind!!
Well, back to my trip. . At eight o'clock at night the first mamma turte came to lay her eggs - we wen't to see her, and it was even more fantastic than I could emagine ! She was in a trance while laying the eggs, and when she was done, she took her big loofers and covered her eggs gently with sand - she was so loving and gentle towards her eggs I felt tears building up. =) truely amazing.
Next we were givin a basket with about 30 babyturtles in it , which we were suppose to help out to sea =) They just walked in every direction, and one kept coming back to me, i felt like just putting him in my pocket!! They are truely the cutest things i have ever seen, and it was just such a wonderful experience. When we went to bed I came to think about how lucky i am to have been a widness to such special events.
Next morning we wen't on a boat back to the mainland and got breakfast at some waterhouses (houses build on water)- truely amazing ! We were picked up by a car who drove us to Sepilok Nature resort. First we made a stop in a very small town in the middle of no where. The people there was SO RUDE expecially the women. Iv been to Egypt which is almost 100pct muslim and they at least respected that not everyone share their beleifs and were super sweet and very polite to fareners, even though we are different - but these women !! I was wearing long pants and a halter top ( not even remotely sexy to me) But because i did not cover my shoulders i was pushed hard in the sides by women and they looked at me and shaked their heads - iv never seen such rude behavior, but i guess the just follow the norms of their surroundings - But it still made me sad. Later we arrived at Sepilok, just in time to see the orangutans being fed. There where to many people and our group desided to walk around to see if we could see some on our own - And we did !! and they came so close to me I could have touched them - but we had been told not to, and i was not about to break the rules =) They were really nice. Afterwards a man followed us to our house in Sepilok nature resort - Was I surprised !! We got our own 2 floor house with 3 kingsize beds, a balcony with riverview, and a garden filled with flowers, trees and butterfliies =) it was the most beautifull hotel we had been in. We walked around the resort, located right next to the rainforrest. We walked through their orchid garden which was lovely beyond words =) We also saw a rainforrest squirrel - its black !! haha, USA have grey squirrels, Denmark has red squirrels and Borneo has Black ones !! We loved it there but had to return to Kuching to see the Iban tribe. ..
More to come !!
