Nebraska's Scenery ;)
Ah! We hit the road again this morning at 10:30, hoping to have a better day today after a great nights sleep. We quickly cut over to Nebraska where we ended up on 20 hwy instead of 12 hwy but enjoyed it none the less. When we realized we were on the highway running parallel but below 12 we just cut back up where we were supposed to be and continued on. Our first stop was the Niobrara State Park in Nebraska. It was soooo gorgeous. It's a great state park that goes with the landscape and not against it. Plus there were a lot of bluffs where you could take pictures and b/c of how they constructed the park you couldn't see a single road and it looked like one huge forest. The river ran around 2 sides of the park and made great photographic moments too.
We continued West across the state to Verdel where we got some pics of a wood Lewis & Clark figure and learned about George Shannon. We saw some great Historical Markers (some of them gave us very short notice to stop to see them but we just did a u-ey) one of them was Lewis & Clark camped near the MO river. Another was one remembering some airmen lost in a crash near Naper and was a very humbling experience. A marker that was very inspiring was the one for the Clopton family. They homesteaded in Nebraska on 16 acres given to them by the Government with the families promise to raise trees to help bring trees to the Nebraska area.
Our next stop was the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge (which was another short notice sign and we did a u-ey to see this one too lol) We got some great pictures of Prairie Dogs (they must reproduce faster than anything known to man b/c they were ALL OVER this refuge). We saw some Buffalo's too but they were to shy to come play with our Jetta. The elk however were more than willing to pose for pictures. There were two of them and we couldn't tell if the one laying in the grass was a fake to keep the other elk (prolly a male lol jk jk) in the area or not.
Our last historical marker was the history on the Sandhills which were everywhere!! They went from a scattering of rolling hills to very frequent rolling hills to just plum invading the territory. We got some great shots of the setting sun as we ended our trip in Chadron at 8:02 pm after 10 hrs of driving!!(yes we were on schedule today). Until tomorrow!
