Eternity in a cave along with the threats of being kicked off a train! Wooh!
Today we got to fix our reservations on the 1880 train and in high hopes of getting to ride the train today. We called the office and were able to change our reservations to 2:30 pm this afternoon. We were cutting it close but we got there just on time to pick our tickets up. We boarded the train in high spirits ready to have a blast. Little did we know it wasn’t going to be all that we expected it to be. We had high hopes of going into the Black Hills backlands to view locations you can’t see from the road. We were sorely disappointed in that area. The pamphlet made it out to be something that it was not. Everything you could see from the train you could see by driving down Old Hill City Road. L An hour later we arrived at Hill City disappointed we spent $40 on something that wasn’t what we thought it would be but we made the best of it ready to head back to Keystone. As we were getting ready to head back a train employee came up to me and this conversation soon followed:
Train employee: “Ma’am is that a dog?!” (In a really loud voice in an attempt to embarrass me).
Me: “Yes, why?”
T.E.: “Dogs are not allowed on the train at all! Did you get on the train at Keystone and you’re on your way back?!” Again all in a loud voice.
Me: (I was angry by this time b/c he was obviously being rude and trying to make a scene) “Yes” I said as nicely as I could then I asked “So what now?” Dad was trying not to laugh b/c I said it with such an attitude.
T.E.: “Well you do realize that if anyone gets sick we’re liable?”
Me: “Sick?!” (With a confused face and reaching for his vaccine papers we have)
T.
Me: “Oh….”
T.E.: “Well there’s nothing that can be done about it now.”
The train employee walked off and I was mad, not b/c he said something which I know is his job, but the way he handled it. Trying to embarrass me is the worst thing possible, I got really mad b/c there’s more appropriate ways to handle it instead of being a jerk. Plus I thought if they really were liable would he be screaming it at the top of his lungs? Yea I thought not… So we headed back to Keystone more than happy to get off of the train and away from the rude man (who eyeballed us the entire way off ugh).
We decided to head to the glassblowers we tried to visit yesterday but they were closed.
We then headed off to Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns, which is right outside of Rapid City. The cave is very unique but if you can’t make it up a very strenuous series of stairs then I recommend you visit another cave that’s easier to get to. But if you can make the stairs then I suggest you stop to see this one. There’s a ton of dog tooth spar crystals coming out of the ceiling along with a lot of different layers of stone that’s amazing. It’s around $8 to get in and the tour lasts about 40 minutes but it’s worth the work out J
After a full day we headed back to the cabin for the night J
