Royal Gorge in Colorado
Wooooooooooooo the Royal Gorge….well yea not really. We’re all excited about seeing the bridge and we know we’re going to have to pay a toll to get on it right? Right. Well it’s a “park” if you can call it that. As we’re driving there we see a sign saying its 360 acres of park. We’re thinking Score!!! Hahaha the joke was on us. We drive up to the gate and its $23 a person. Ok…no problem it’s a suspended bridge and park right? We pay a total of $46 for two blocks of things to do. Yes…there’s a petting zoo, a drive through viewing of wildlife which consisted of reindeer, goats and buffalo. Three compounds of animals and that was it. Then there was a tram which I decided to ride, we did pay $46 so I might as well put it to good use. After walking half a mile up incredible inclines I arrive. Yay! The tram is on the other side…no problemo.
I sit and wait and wait and wait some more. Finally I ask the lady “Is the tram coming back to this side?” Her response, “Yes they’re loading as we speak”. Yea right….20 minutes later, I’m dying of thirst and the bugs are eating me alive I get up disappointingly and leave. I walk back to the car and still the tram isn’t there. Pffft. I keep up the optimism somewhat and go to check out the mountain man encampment. (I should’ve just left) I get up the stairs which consisted of climbing a small mountain side with 4x4x8 boards placed at various points to “help”. There’s only one shop open and the others open at 11…the park opened at 7:00 a.m. and we got there at 9:50 a.m. That’s the last straw and I go back to the car and tell dad we’re leaving. Just as I’m getting ready to get in the car I hear a helicopter. I’m infatuated with planes/helicopters, etc so I stopped to watch.
View from the bridge
That was probably the best thing I saw in the “park”. The helicopter went right over my head and straight down into the gorge by the bridge. It was craziness and everyone was freaking out.
A house up on the canyon wall
We go back to town and we stopped at a convenience store while there the clerk asks me what I’m up to. I told her about the Gorge and she said that she never goes b/c it’s not worth it and the other clerk goes what’s not worth it the Gorge? Yea…I hate that place. I couldn’t believe the locals hated it! Ay yi yi. Anyways we headed of East to cross Kansas and make it home tomorrow or the day after.
The drive through Colorado was beautiful. As we were going down 96 hwy we went through this town and saw a cop. We hadn’t seen one in quite awhile and knew he was going to bust the semi in front of us blazing along.
Well he didn’t pull out of the parking lot he was in and pull him over and we were thinking what in the world? As we went by we saw he was asleep! I was laughing so hard I almost had to pull over. Dads said we should’ve got a picture of Barney Fife and sent it back to the town J We were also very sleep deprived b/c of the hotel we stayed in last night. Let’s just say it wasn’t a good one at all. So I almost had to pull over one more time b/c of a “hanging” joke dad made while passing a cemetery…yeah I won’t explain that one. We finally arrived at a good hotel and made camp for the night. We were definitely happy to find a good one tonight!
