I didn't particularly want to know that I would spend yet another night here at
Sam's Guesthouse. As lovely as Sophia and the others are, I want to be in my
own home.
I talked to Fiona this morning at 1000 and she told me then that I would have
to stay another night. I'm beginning to think I should have taken Matt up on
his offer of his spare room. Oh well. If Fiona had told me earlier that I would
be staying, I could have gone on some tour or other, but no, she waits until
the middle of the day again, when all the tours have departed and I need to
find something to do. Today I wrote to a friend from my new room, oh, there is
some news; I have switched rooms to the main guesthouse. I like the room
better, even if the wallpaper is held up with sticky tape and there are water
stains on the ceiling, but at least I can have a cup of tea or coffee, and I
have a nice view out my window of the Chinese Garden. But I am on the fourth
floor and there is no elevator, so I will be fit by the time I check out
(whenever that may be).
So today, I walked into town to try to find the bookstore selling books written
in English. I found one bookstore with a few titles in English, all the classics
I have already read and one book on contemporary Chinese fiction, so I bought
that one and will look for the other bookshop another day (probably tomorrow
after Fiona calls again to tell me I will stay "Just one more
night"). Anyway...
Yesterday after my tea in the People's park I discovered a little food stall
selling some sort of little pancake with either savoury mince or some sort of
sugar concoction in the middle. I loved them so much I went back today to get a
few more. I took some photos of them so you can see what they are. The girl was
so lovely; I was learning to count to five with her. She spoke very little
English, but when I went, "One, two, three, four, five - English."
and then, "Un, deux, trios, quatre, cinq - French" she understood
what I was saying and taught me 1-5 in Chinese. I will learn this language one
way or the other.
I only asked for three (san)of the little pancakes, but she gave me four (si),
I think I had started something, because when I arrived they were very quiet
and all sitting inside chatting, and then when I was ready to leave, there was
a big line up for the little pancakes. I like the savoury ones the best. The sugary
ones are just a bit too sweet.
I am going to go to another old part of town tonight, it is
only a couple of block away and it is meant to be quite good, so I’ll tell you
about it in the morning after Fiona has told me “Just one more night.”
Well, on that note I shall leave you. Enjoy your day.
Sylvia, it is the teacher at the school who has the key to my room it is not Fiona. Apparently, the teacher will come back from visiting her family today. With the big holiday, everyone left town. If I had known before I left Australia, I would not have rushed to get here. Oh, well, it is all experience.
I'm sorry you had a bad day Rudolph, I hope tomorrow is a better one for you.
Dear me... but tomorrow is the 8th...the day they wished you to start.... maybe you should contact someone of authority to see if you should make your way to the school to teach.... yikes... How badly has fiona screwed up here... I'm paranoid...(maybe I should capitolize the "P") Glad you moved rooms so you are happier... and have a nicer view... I am going to think good thoughts .... really strong good thoughts... Love you xoxoxo sylvia
It was nice of you to wish me an enjoyable day, but unfortunately it didn't work. My day was horrible :(( Those Chinese with their red tape and control issues probably block all the good vibes :)
