Tioman Island - nothing special

From Perhentian Island I went south to Cherating which, according to the guidebook, should have been the most popular beach town (with all possible water sport facilities you can imagine) on the eastern coast of Malaysian peninsula....Ha ha ha, when I got there, the beach was completely deserted......but maybe because of that I had good time with two other travelers who were also tricked by the guidebook...Or rather it was just the beginning of the season, who knows...
Anyway, the very next day I took a bus from Cherating to Kuantan where I changed for Mersing from where a speed boat got me on Tioman Island, the ABC beach.....Well, some people told me Tioman Island is nicer and water clearer than on Perhentian Island.
...I say it's rubbish. Water was not very clear, visibility max 5-8m., corals so-so, sand not really white, plenty of garbage around. To be fair, after I had left Tioman I met the same German guy I earlier met in Cherating and he told me he had gone to a beach on the east coast of Tioman (probably Juara)  and it was beautiful. The only problem is how to get there, you need to trek 7km. through the jungle...The very first day I arrived on Tioman I checked in at the SPC resort, killed few cockroaches in my room :-) and met Martin, a Czech guy who was staying next door. We spent all three days together trying to find a good place for snorkeling (without a success) while sipping cheap beer cans in between (ps: Tioman island is a duty-free destination so you can buy a beer can for as low as 2.5 ringgit in a duty-free shop). At the end of my stay I did some diving but it was not special too, however, it needs to be said it was just one diving spot and Tioman offers many of them....

Oh God! I planning to go to this island. If the water is not clean, its better I cancel my plan to go there. Thanks for your review.

I used to go to Tioman back in the late 80s and early 90s and saw it deteriorate in that time. I'm sorry to hear there is still garbage - at least the water was clear when I was there!
