a modern Wat in Chiang Rai
Chiang Rai, the capitol of the Golden Triangle, offers, as a city, not much. Quite interesting is the new Wat which was designed by a famous Thai artist whose name, unfortunatelly, I don't remember. The Wat is unsually all in white and is situated c. 13km to the south of the city. Also, quite interesting is the Hill Tribe Museum which offers tourists an insight into the different hill tribes living in the northern part of Thailand. There's also a section designated to opium and all that stuff. At the museum, I met Paul whom I met again in Akha Hill House (www.akhahill.com), some 25km from Chiang Rai. This is the place I would recommend other travelers. I would say that Akha village is not worth visiting if you're solely interested in the "hill-tribe things" but the location of the village in the mountains at the elevation of 1500m and surrounded by a jungle is fantastic. It's so quiet there and you can do some walks on your own (watch out for snakes :-)) or in an organized group. I spent 3 nights there as the surroundings were beautiful, accomodation and food reasonable and....they had free satellite broadband :-) One day I went to Chiang Song which is a town at Mekong river from where you can see three countries: Thailand, Laos and Myanmar...
