boats on Ao Nang beach
I took an overnight boat-and-bus trip from Koh Tao
for 750baht because I thought it was a good value. And it was a good value except for the fact that they didn't let me get off the bus in Krabi town so I found myself somewhere 3km away from the town. No problem, they told me I could pay 50 baht more for the transfer to the city. Loosers! I complained that this was not part of the deal, that this is a typical tourist rip-off but nothing helped. That crappy travel agency is Family PP, the one recommended in Lonely Planet! I put my backpack on and started walking toward the city center. After a kilometer or so I flagged down a sangthaew going to Ao Nang Beach, the place I wanted to go.
getting on the boat to Railay beach
...When I got there I was quite lucky to find a very decent room for 300baht (shared bahtroom) at Jinda guesthous. Ao Nang beach is not really spectacular or suitable for beach activities but you can use it as an exploring base to the sourroundigs what I basically did. After I checked in to my guesthouse I took a longtail boat to Railay West beach (a returned ticket cost 180baht) which according to some people belongs to the most beautiful beaches in Thailand.....From there I walked through Railay East beach that was terrible, kind of a swamp, to Pra Nang beach which was quite lovely.
I knew I wanted to see Phi Phi island but instead of going there for a day or two (and pay for very expensive accomodation) I did what few travellers recommended me to do - to go there with a daily tour. I picked one called "Phi Phi Island - snorkeling" because I like snorkeling a lot and Phi Phi island is known for its crystal clear water, plenty of fish and nice coral reefs....During the tour we visited around 7 places around Phi Phi including the famous Maya Bay (from "The Beach" movie). We snorkeled at 3 places and all of them were just....wonderful!
I also met some nice people from Singapore who I might meet again within next two weeks as I'm heading down there...
