Breakfast in Andersonville with the Sweds
Today we leave Chicago for a day trip north to Racine, Wisconsin. But first, I planned a surprise stop for breakfast. For those of you that have not read my profile, my wife Lena is from Sweden, so when we see anything to do with Sweden, we are all over it. We will usually research a big city like New York or Chicago and locate a Swedish restaurant or museum to visit. It makes her feel good to fine parts of her home here in the U.S. On this trip however, Lena never mentioned looking for a Swedish restaurant while we were in Chicago. So, I did some research on my own and found a neighborhood of Chicago called Andersonville, one of the most concentrated areas of Swedish culture in the United States. Here, I found a restaurant call Ann Sather, which from their web site I saw had Swedish breakfast items.
So, everyone is up and we are headed out the door. I would only give Lena the address so she could navigate me to the surprise location. Of course, all along the way everyone was asking, "Where are we going?" or "How far is it?" and of course "Are we there yet?" As soon as we turned on N. Clark Street, we saw Swedish flags, signs and other things Swedish. Lena was so happy and amazed that I found this little Swedish neighborhood and surprised her with us going here! We park on the street and walked less than a block to Ann Sather, stopping for pictures of Lena with a very large Dala Horse. For info of what a Dala Horse is, check this out this site: http://www.hemslojd.com/swedish_dala_horse_story.html
After a very good and filling breakfast, we checked out a few shops and attempted to go into the Swedish/American Museum, but it didn't open until 11:00 am. Oh well, time to go to Wisconsin!
