A Weekend in the country

We made our way by car in the morning from Valencia to Betera. On arriving I thought this was especially nice as I had the opportunity to spend some time with Juan and Gena in their family country house outside of city life. This was a welcomed retreat for me after a week in the Big and Busy city of Barcelona. We had some excellent paella one afternoon. You can purchase it in the local restaurants, complete with the pan it is cooked in, and when finished, return the pan later. It was the ‘real-deal’ paella, so to speak and more authentic than what I had seen in looking for a place to sample it on Las Ramblas in Barcelona a few days earlier. If this was not enough, it was followed by a wonderful home cooked dinner that night. One of the dishes, the potato pie, was out of this world wonderful. The next day was relaxation with a meal and gathering outside for lunch before returning to the city. Inside the weekend there was conversation, sharing as friends, playing chamelo (domino), excellent meals, working in the garden, watching Nika and Tekla roam free and just enjoying life. It was quite special for me. I feel in this way I experienced more of the life in Spain with my friends in Valencia in these weekend days than I did in a week in Barcelona. Thank you Juan and Gena!
