When Grand Master Jean Parisot de la Valette laid the foundation Stone of Hamulissima Civitas Valletae, the last thing that he had in mind was a city of fine palaces.

Valletta was intended to protect the two harbours on either side of the rocky peninsula on which it was to be built.
