Africa Asia Venture
August 9, 2009
I went on my 5 week trip with a company called Africa and Asia Venture. They are mentioned in the Lonely Planet Gap year Guide, mainly recommended for their 4 month ventures which involve teaching or conservation.
They also offer 5 week ventures which is what I chose. Mainly due to time and money. The trips are good value and well organised. You get to travel and experience lots of different things other than your main work helping a community somewhere. This is also all included in the trip and price you pay.
We went on a safari visiting 2 game parks; Tsavo West and Amboseli which was fantastic we had 4 days of game drives and that was a perfect amount. Any longer and we would have got bored.
We also got to stay in a cottage in Diani and visit Mombasa and later Nairobi.
At the end of the trip we stayed at a a camp by the river and did rock-climbing, whitewater kayaking and whitewater rafting. You could also choose to climb Mt. Kenya instead. All immense fun!
The trip ended in Nairobi at a campsite called Indaba and we had the chance to visit the famous Masai Market which was fantastic. If you are there on a tuesday you will definitely be able to visit.
I was also given the chance to teach at the school where we worked and that was definitely the most rewarding and fantastic experience I had out of the whole trip.
You organise your own flights and buy all your own equipment. Otherwise the majority of the trip is laid out and sorted for you. If you are a very independent traveller then this is probably not ideal for you but if you haven't done much before and would like a slightly easier option then this is perfect.
The age range is 18-25. Although this may have changed.
