Day 1 Kanchanaburi
July 21, 2009
The bus stopped at the final busstop, the station of Kanchanaburi. We were helped immediately by tuk tuk drivers that asked us where we were going. After saying "we don't have any idea" they showed us great brochures of hotels and guesthouses. I love it when a plan comes together! We picked one guesthouse (based on the pictures in the brochure) and the good man brought us to PongPhen Guesthouse. Nice place when we arrived, just like the pictures! There were rooms available, only not the cheapest ones. We took the averaged priced room and were very happy after seeing it. Big, good bed, wonderful shower and beautiful balcony with a view!
After getting settled and resting a while, we went out to see the neighbourhood.... not so lively as we had thougth! But we managed to find a restaurant near our guesthouse and decided to order a meal there. At this place we discovered 'chicken garlic & pepper' and from that day we were addicted to it! Yummie!
After dinner we walked a bit more in the area and found a travelagency, KTC 'Kanchanaburi Travel Centre'. There were a view things we wanted to do and some things we definitely didn't want to do (no elephants, nog tigers). The girl working at KTC told us that tomorrow a group left to see the Erawan Waterfalls, the Hellfire pass, a trainride over the railroad and the bridge over the river Kwai. We decided to go with the group after finding out that the waterfalls were 70 km's away from Kanchanaburi! There's no way to do that with a taxi or a tuk-tuk! (we don't like organized group tours, but we didn't have much choice in this case).
We promised Anne to be back at 08.00 hr in the morning.
